Hayden Fry's "Top 25" - #11

NOVEMBER 14TH, 1987 - IOWA 29 (at) Ohio State 27. I went back–and–forth a hundred times trying to figure out where to put this game. I settled here knowing how big this win was but also facing certain realities about both teams. Let’s not underestimate the team we beat in Columbus that afternoon. They earned an early–season tie against an LSU team that was, at the time, #4 and ended the season #4. They did beat Michigan that year. And two weeks earlier, they lost a last–second heart–breaker to eventual conference champ Michigan State.

Unfortunately, they had been upset the next week (the week before the Iowa game) at Wisconsin, again losing in the final minute, this time to a field goal. So Iowa came into Columbus with the Bucks riding a 2–game losing streak, and neither team rated in the Top 20. And right when it looked like the Buckeyes were going to hold on and beat Iowa late, comes one of THE most memorable plays in Iowa history. We could be in a situation like that 100 times, not only against Ohio State, but many other teams, and not be able to convert 98 of them. But a brilliant decision by Churck Hartlieb not to throw the 4th-down pass into the end zone, and let Marv Cook go one-on-one leads Iowa to one of the more shocking wins they've ever had.

Of course, the next day, tOSU Earle Bruce was fired, cementing my belief that THE one inexcusable act as a football coach is to lose to Iowa. I placed this game here because the bottom line was that the team we had just beaten ended their season at 6–4–1.

The highlights are here:

Hartlieb threw a back shoulder pass before it was known as a back shoulder pass.

A couple observations: Ronnie Harmon was on the take in this game. He really couldnt get out of bounds. Looks like he took a dive.
The announcers saying Iowa really doesnt have a run game

How dynamic Harmon was. That guy pissed away a great pro career getting involved with the shit he did.

Notice the stadium still had the track between the stands and the field. It was removed in 00-01 to afford even more seating capacity.

Ronnie was in the NFL in 1987. Kevin was on the team in ‘87.

Right. And it's curious - our leading rusher in 1986 was Rick Bayless, who had a helluva season and was no small part of us getting to 8-3. In that game in '87, he was just getting back from injury. He had like only two rushes the entire game - both effective, but neither of which got him more carries. No question in my mind he was a difference maker.

Harmon hardly pissed away a pro career. He played for 11 years and was pretty good 3rd down RB. I think he had 9,000 career yards from scrimmage and 30+ TDs.

Like Dwight, he was born a few decades too early. Those guys would thrive in today's game.

Granted it wasn't the best OSU team, but winning in Columbus is tough, so I think that makes that pass to Cook even sweeter. I have a friend that says some OSU fans were thanking the Hawks for winning that game, as it led to the firing of Bruce, who they couldn't stand. Of course, having to follow Woody Hayes was no picnic.

All of this, plus extreme boredom, cause me to check out some Iowa-OSU factoids. The Hawks have won more at Columbus (8) than they've won at home (7), although their winning percentage is better at home, 7-17-2 than at Columbus, 8-30-1 (which points out that Iowa has played 13 more road games in this series). Kirk's record versus the Buckeyes - 2-9. 0-5 on the road, 2-4 at home. Hayden - 3-11-1. 2-6 on the road, 1-5-1 at home. Evashevski - 4-4. 3-1 at home, 1-3 on the road. Those good Iowa teams in the 20s went 4-3-1.

Earl Bruce's hat was spectacular. It did not finish the game. :)

Watched that game in my dorm room in Burge. Quast got a pic that game. I remember how roided up he looked those days. He was huge by those days standards. Was so jealous of him
