Hawks get Rodney Dangerfield treatment from Yahoo Sports

They get no respect. No respect, I tell ya. Jeff Eisenberg, editor of Yahoo Sports' The Dagger, looked at who Yahoo users like to pull early upsets. Winner of the Iowa-Tennessee "first four" (!) game figures in the 11-6 Round of 64 as the most popular upset favorite over UMass (picked by 32.1 percent of users). But Eisenberg sniffs: This pick makes far more sense if the Vols emerge from the play-in game than it does if the Hawkeyes do. Iowa limped into the NCAA tournament after dropping six of seven including an opening-round Big Ten tournament loss to Northwestern.

I have seen a similar sentiment on every major basketball website I follow. At first it ****** me off, but you can't really blame them for stating something like that.

But it also got me thinking. This team was so much better when it was not getting the accolades we all thought they deserved. Maybe this negative press will help bring this team back together and light a fire under their *****.

I'm going to be an Iowa apologist for a second. Don't get me wrong, the NW loss was entirely unacceptable, but I'm sick of Tennessee being this "runaway favorite" to win this game.

The only reason people are gasping at Tennessee is because they hung with Florida in the ACC tournament. That is the ONLY reason. However, if you watched the game, they blew a 7 point halftime lead by completely falling apart in the second half. They scored 14 points on 5 of 20 shooting and committed 11 turnovers. In other words Tennessee is suddenly a trendy pick because they played 1 good half against Florida. They should have won that game! Florida basically handed it to them.

Tennessee is a team that lost to UTEP, who Iowa then blew out by 35 points. Tennessee is a team who lost to Texas A&M twice this year. This is a team who Florida beat three times including a blowout win by 26 points earlier in the year. Its hard to beat a team 3 times in a season, so I attribute the TN/FLA tournament game to nothing more than the Vols being extremely familiar with Florida...yet still losing. People talk like Tennessee is this unstoppable force inside yet Iowa outrebounds them statistically and plays in a lot tougher conference.

I think this is the reason Iowa opened as a 3 point underdog and is now a 3 point favorite. People overreacted because Tennessee "almost" beat Florida...but then the sharps came in and Vegas corrected itself.

I'm not saying Iowa will win this game, but these idiots picking Tennessee to be a much better team than Iowa are just ignorant.

No, i think Tenn is the trendy pick because Iowa, well, we sorta suck. Actually, as of late, we pretty much completely suck.

I'll take the hotter team, that can shoot, that has athletes, that can play defense.

Yeah, that ain't us.

I dont necessarily disagree, but for some reason Tennessee is this major sleeper team that people already are picking to shock Duke. Are they even a runaway favorite against Iowa? Not in the slightest.

I can't really argue it. Iowa played horribly down the stretch and TN has played well. Not that Iowa doesn't have the potential, but they haven't done much lately to earn respect. That loss to NW was the cherry on top.

Respect is something you earn. Hawks need to go out and earn it.

The version of Iowa basketball that doesn't play defense may not even be NIT caliber. For about 1/5 of the season now we haven't played good defense. That bad 1/5th is also the most recent. There isn't much reason to pick Iowa right now because there's is a good chance that at this point, awful Iowa is who we are.

Also, Tennessee is better than the two teams who most recently beat us. They're better than Minnesota and Indiana too. The only thing we really have going for us is that this group of players was good once and it's not unfathomable to have a talented group put it all back together.

I guess I'm hoping for some freakin' miracle here....we don't deserve the respect, and if Rodney Dangerfield is who we are then so be it...Like 1977 said, we have to go out and earn it, so which Iowa team is going to show up and play B1G Ten basketball they way it should be played...we have to be physical, get on the floor, and in your face defensively if we want any part the respect we deserve back on our side...Bejeezus, we got here (barely), so let's have some fun and go down swingin....what the hell do you have to lose....We as fans, and Iowa as players do not need to read anymore press as to why we are not playing good right now, we already know that, so it's time to buck up and get nasty...

But can we flip the switch and get better in one game? My thinking is probably not. If we were going to do that we would have did it against northwestern. I think we are done

You may be right, but I hope the players respond in a way that makes us get pumped again....and if not, then so be it...we say goodbye to 3 seniors and move on....

The OP was the one who started the thread a couple days ago wondering if Iowa would accept a CBI bid because if Iowa missed the NCAA tourney, the NIT would not be interested. And now he is playing the "no respect to Iowa" card. Thats rich.

I'm with you.

Whatever happens in this tournament, I want the team to give a good account of themselves and coming out swinging. If it isn't enough, then so be it. I can live with that. If Iowa shows up looking uninspired the way they did against NW, that will be tough to swallow.

I don't care who you play, if your guards not named Marble shoot a combined 0-18, you aren't going to beat anyone wearing a Big Ten uniform, even a short handed NW team. Geez, 0-18...how do you explain that in the film room. I didn't see the game, but was there any paint left on the rim...that's alot of bricks going at painted metal.

I am not sure just how Iowa will do it, but...

1) I want to see the Hawks play with some heart and guts, please!, for what could be their last game of the season.
2) Want TN to have an off shooting game. Can we please, PLEASE have a team playing against us shoot less than 55%! Our D is off BUT cmon can we not catch a break sometime?
3) Want Iowa to stick a dagger in TN in the waning moments. Once, just once this season, can we get this done.
4) Move on to the true field to play UMass on CBS (so I can actually see the game on my boobtube). What the heck is truteevee anyway??

TruTV - If you get cable through Verizon, Directv, etc. I would think you would likely get this channel. It's one of the four that will be broadcasting NCAA games. The others are CBS, TBS and TNT.
