Hawkeyes: Phil Parker Presser

Talking about playing press and getting dinged on the fade. Glad I am not the only one who sees what the fade does in certain situations. Flag or a catch, choose your poision. Which will be interesting to see what MSU does. There might be ways for us to allow them to beat themselves.

For a CB who plays any press coverage, you have to expect a fair amount of auto-adjust fades from your guy. As Parker eluded to though, you can disguise press by closing late, or make a habit of using press-bail to mess with their heads. Iowa's CBs on the outside have had issues getting their heads around and finding the ball, even when in position to do so. Getting a CB to consistently turn and find the ball while trailing is very difficult. Also haven't been physical enough with the bump and it allows the WR to beat them to the spot down-field. Hyde has been the best defender against the fade and it's probably due to his size and solid techniuqe. He did have a fade completed on him and also a PI flag in the NIU game but has been solid since then. He has been doing a great job of denying the WR space to work with and forces them into the sideline.

Spot on. I mentioned them not getting their heads around after this last game. If your beat, your beat and at that point you have to try and knock it out of their hands or just rip away and hold onto it :) . Hyde does it well and that is why he gets the int's. If your going to play a bit looser, you have to be in position to jump the route. Finally I would like to see better hand placement when tackling, if they do make the catch. If we cant get pressure, we need the secondary to really step it up, because one way or another we have to be able to shut down the passing game. Me personally, I dont mind playing contain, but we need to get the ints, knock downs and be able to punch the ball out, in the back if that is the case. This style of play really helps with the HS ball many of the teams are playing now. OSU, Nebby, NU, not to mention the ones we see in bowls. Seems our secondary is the lagging group thus far.
That said ALL the kids are working hard and making great improvment.
