Hawkeyes in the NFL Week 2: Christian Kirksey Shining in Green Bay

Thanks for reading.

Happy Clayborn and Scherff injuries aren't as bad as originally expected.

Always awesome to see former Hawks do well. The NFL has become harder to watch over the years, but that at least provides some incentive and enjoyment.

One thing I will reluctantly add. Kirksey actually has disappointed somewhat thus far for Green Bay. His stat line looks good but is deceiving. He has struggled with his gap assignments and playing in space - something we've unfortunately seen from the Green Bay ILBs for quite awhile.

Hopefully, it's just the adjustment period and he'll pick it up as the season goes on, but the press in G.B. has already called out his performance the first two weeks. I'm obviously pulling for him to turn it around and be an improvement over Blake Martinez.

so what I’m hearing is it is one of those deals where, in every defense there is probably a certain position it is likely going to end up making more tackles than anyone else on the team. And in this defense it is his position.

Is that what you’re saying?

Interesting. I admittedly have not watched a snap of Packer football this season and honestly watch very little of the NFL. I'll watch the NFL if I'm free and a former Hawkeye is playing. As a Jets fan, there really isn't incentive beyond that.

Kirksey did miss an entire season and like the rest of the league went through an unusual preseason. I would think he's still knocking off some rust.

Not sure I completely understand your question. Yes, as a MLB in GB's system, you are almost always going to be at or near the top in number of tackles, but the MLB almost always is near the top in any system.

The Packers were hoping for an upgrade over Blake Martinez, who's not a bad player at all, but probably not worth his contract demands, and thus far Christian has struggled. Again, I'm hoping he turns it around. It's early and he's on a new team.

His PFF rating after the first two weeks is 30.1, which ranks him at or near the bottom in the league.

And, he has been listed as a "dud" two weeks in a row by packerswire.com:

Don't get me wrong, I'm not "hating" on him, and, as a Hawkeye and Packer fan, would like nothing better than to see him do great. Just keeping it real.

Yeah, he's had a ton of injury issues, which was the main reason Cleveland let him go.

It's still early, but I have to admit, watching Kirk Cousins out-race him in the Vikings game was a little disconcerting...

Rob, I’ve never lived east of Iowa, and I’ve always been curious about this....

I’ve visited the NE quite a bit and it’s mind boggling how many pro teams are packed in such a small area. Is there a rhyme or reason to how people root for NFL teams, or do people just pick one? Like are people from Jersey typically Jets fans and NYC’ers Giants fans? Or is it pretty random? I get it that Bostonians are Pats fans, but within about 250 miles you have the Giants, Jets, Ravens, Washington, and the Eagles. It’s nuts.

I’m a Vikings fan and they’re by far the closest team to me, and it’s 200 miles away.

Why are soooo many people pounding their chest and "bragging" about how they don't watch football anymore? Is it like a badge of honor or something?:)

I’m from NYC. Moved here in ‘97 to cover Iowa sports for the Press-Citizen. My mom still lives in NY and my dad is in NJ.

In NY it usually goes Yankees, Giants and Rangers or Mets, Jets and Islanders. I’m the latter. Everybody likes the Knicks. The Nets have gained fans since the move to Brooklyn.
