Hawkeyes in the NFL Week 1: George Kittle, Anthony Hitchens Shine

After a lot of buzz in the preseason, rookie offensive lineman James Daniels, 21, did not play for the Bears. Coach Matt Nagy said recently that the former Hawkeye center needed to improve his recognition of fronts and blitzes. He also wanted to see him play with better leverage.

Did any of these NFL scouts watch the Wisconsin or Purdue games? Daniels looked totally lost against those 3-4 packages. He's fundamentally a great blocker and very gifted athletically, but that recognition aspect of his game was clearly lacking and it doesn't get easier on Sundays.

The Patriots had Riley McCarron active on Sunday. He fumbled a punt return and was promptly waived yesterday

Not that Daniels is second guessing his decision to go pro cause he's getting paid to not even play football now but man. We could sure use him...

Yeah he wasn't/isn't a finished product by any means. Everyone was betting on his future... In 5 yrs he might be the best center in the league or he might not. But in the mean time he's getting paid 2nd round pick NFL money to watch games and not get beat up so there's that...

Agreed, but if I'm a GM picking that high I'm hoping that I have a guy who could start right away. I think he'll get better or else they'll just have to move him guard and he could have a 10 year career at that position.

Oh I'm sure that was their hopes and plans taking him that high too along with the other teams considering taking him. That said everyone is always in such a hurry to put rookies in the lineup regardless of how ready they are or what position they play it's kinda refreshing to see the Bears say nope not throwing you out there yet. They need to win some games and if they have some better guards and a center now it should be that simple of a decision to make
