Hawkeyes Haul in '20 Texas QB Deuce Hogan

What really impresses me about this young man is the way he carries himself. He's insightful, articulate and mature beyond his years. Great find and addition to the program.

Long way off. Hope we can keep him in the fold.

mose, i think this is a solid commitment. click on rob's link and look for the embedded interview where DH talks about loving the white board session with KOK and the chess game that is the pro style offense. i read another interview where DH said he actually knew a lot about Iowa because he started breaking them down in 8th grade because of the pro style offense. I think this kid is as firm as can be.

I have no clear data collection upon which to base this thought: However, is it my imagination, or is Iowa recruiting at both a higher level of candidates, as well as securing commitments from kids who are receiving some pretty darn big time offers? Just seems like we have really upgraded. For example, this kid is rated as one of the top 15 QB's by a couple of fairly reliable sources.

Should of dumped our boat anchor a lot earlier ( GD and his pal ) and got KOK back in the fold.

i think we're seeing why the blue blood schools were NOT in favor of early signing periods. Granted DH is a '20, but look at Padilla. He's locked in (assuming he signs in December) instead of having another 2+ months after the season ends to be wooed by other schools. i think you're right that we're seeking a higher caliber and i think the increased success is due to the early signing period.

This kid is smart and driven. Watching his sophomore tape shows me one of the purest and fastest releases I have seen from an Iowa QB prospect. My this kid can sling the rock. He already knows a bunch of fundamentals of the pro style. If he enrolls early he could push to start as a true freshman.

Very astute observation Huck. I have been saying this for the last 2 years. Rivals had an article awhile back that showed this how Iowa's last 3 recruiting classes were a significant uptick from what they had been getting.

Spot on Arvada. This is the Blue Bloods worst nightmares really. They HAVE to go aver the highly ranked kids, they can't just start taking the tier 2 kids right away. This gives teams like Iowa a great shot at landing their top targets, which are usually the Blue bloods #2 guys. I mean the Blue Bloods end up taking a lot of their #2 guys, but if Iowa can fight them off, that is great. Plus while I know the Iowa coaches aren't really happy they have to recruit younger and younger kids, it is ultimately going to be an advantage of this staff. They are really good at recognizing talent, and the earlier they are on a kid like Duece, establish a relationship the easier it is for them to hold onto them when others do come calling. Take Stanley for instance, Wisconsin (his home state school) made a hard push for him, and Iowa held onto him because of his relationship with Iowa.

Another great example of this is DJ Johnson. LSU came after him after he committed to Iowa, and Iowa held LSU off. Sure Iowa couldn't hold off Michigan for Van Summerlin, but for the most part Iowa has done a pretty solid job of keeping committed guys committed.

and....schools like Iowa have way more clarity much earlier and there seems to be way less scrambling in January when Iowa's #1 (a blue bloods #2 or #3) decommits from Iowa and chooses the blue blood. And to add to your point, the blue bloods have to OFFER their targets much, much sooner, so all of the secrets are out.

I would also point out that the early signing period deters some of the "bird-dogging" that seemingly was going on with respect to Iowa's recruiting. To this day, I'm convinced that Bielema kept a close eye on who Iowa offered, and often followed up with an offer of his own (and, I have a gut feeling that Harbaugh does it as well so that he can keep the majority of his focus outside the midwest). Kirk even alluded to slow playing some recruits that they liked to keep them off the radar. He specifically mentioned Dez King and Max Cooper.

That's just it. Iowa is known for being very good at recognizing and developing talent. Other people know that.
In the past it has hurt us, because kids saw the lure of big names even if it means riding the pine and just being a number.
We don't work that way. If Iowa offers you it means they see something and expect you to contribute and play. They know how you fit in and aren't just offering to fill the quota.
I think some of the rule changes and just the way the staff has changed some things is starting to turn the tides a little. Not to mention kids aren't as dumb as they used to be. The big names aren't so big anymore and that Iowa is just as capable of playing in big games as anyone else. Not to mention we are pretty good at helping players go on to the NFL.
