HawkeyeGameFilm breaks down the play of James Vandenberg against Penn State. It's not pretty, but he also has some sharp comments on Iowa's scheme.
It seems like, though a small sample size, we have a pretty high success rate throwing it downfield to Davis and either getting PI called or a completion. How is it not evident in film to the coaches that they need to throw it downfield not only to stretch the field but to open up the running game and underneath routes? We are getting beat by very elementary concepts that we can't figure out.
It also seems like many times, a play is checked out of and we run right/run left/3 yard pass play, is that more on the QB or Davis? Lastly, I have never seen a team throw the ball short of the sticks more than we do on 3rd down, doesnt matter if it is 3rd and 5 or 3rd and 12, you can bet at least 1 receiver will run a few yards short of the chains and he is almost always the one targeted. Sad.
