Hawkeyes Feel Good About Depth at Defensive Tackle

That's good news, it seemed at times last year our middle was the soft spot. I know that has to do with mlb as well as great ends. But it seemed like people tested our middle and had some success far to often.

Speaking of D Tackle.....and far be it from me to question coaches.....but what the hell is with moving Logan Lee to D Tackle? The guy is a hell of an athlete who was an absolute monster on the outside. Seems to me that his playmaking abilities would be better served on the outside than being clogged up inside absorbing a guard and a center.

I don’t think that is finalized just yet (not that I would know), but if you look at Logan Lee he looks like he would have no issue adding 30 pounds or more based on his frame.

Could you imagine in a few years Logan Lee and Logan Jones both play DT at 290+ very athletic and strong guys with a ton of talent?

But I'd rather see him at 275, with his speed, getting 12-14 sacks....rather than just clogging up the middle like we ask our d tackles to do in our 2 gap system.....

I get your premise and it’s certainly nice to have DEs who can get after the QB (there were a few years not so long ago we didn’t have much at DE imo). With that said, again it’s pretty early in the game and I trust the coaches know what’s best. DT is still very important in our system as well.

But that's the thing, I don't think he has great speed. For what it is worth, ESPN's recruiting profile has him listed running a 5.1s 40. He does well in the overall testing because he is above average in everything else, and really high in the power throw.

He was effective on both sides of the ball in HS (23 rec TDs across 3 seasons on O, 35 sacks and 52.5 TFL on D) because he could overpower people, he has great leverage (2x state champ in wrestling: 225 as soph, HWT as senior), and he is tough as nails.

I know he could be a great TE, but I always thought he would end up at either DT or OT. You kind of get hints of that from his HS coach as well. Here is a quote from an article about Lee prior to his junior year, and after committing to the Hawks:

"He is an Iowa tight end, through and through," Filler said. "He is a run-blocker. He’ll make plays in the passing game for us. He’ll do well at the next level doing the same thing. People ask me all the time, 'Well don't you think he could play defensive end? Don't you think he could be better at defensive end?'

"I don't think so, at the next level, just because of all the spread offenses and all the people playing in space. His big thing is his physicality, and he can line up at tight end and he can crush people. And I know that’s what Coach (Kirk) Ferentz wants him to do."

Yeah de may get more attention, but it takes a heck of a player and man to play dt.
It's something to watch a dt blow up the middle of a ol.
