Hawkeyes Adjusting to Ever-Changing Recruiting Landscape

Only place the portal is probably of most value is in someone who had mutual interest to start with and maybe got a change of coaches or plain just realized they made a mistake. After all they are young.
Otherwise possibly a grad transfer, but your time is going to be short and so there isn't much room for error. Or juco. You get a little more time and possibly they just needed a little time to develop, physically, or academically.

Still I think if there was ever mutal interest, it makes the decision a little easier for sure.

Great piece Rob.

Glad to hear Abercrumbia is coming in for a visit, Dline depth is obviously a big need.

While I don’t think Iowa will ever be a big transfer school, this year is the slight exception. We’ve had quite a bit of call it unforeseen attrition with the transfers and early entrants that I do think the staff would like to bring in some proven commodities. Blair S mentioned today that the Iowa staff would like to bring in a couple if possible, again there are just so many buyers it might be the case that Iowa just isn’t able to bring in those guys.

I think this years recruiting class is solid, and it will be interesting to see how it ends up. I still think there is plenty of talent on the roster for next year, just need to put it all together.

Harder for Iowa to find diamonds in the rough like Desmond King, Micah Hyde, Mike Daniels and Brandon Myers with early signing period:

Rob, do you see this resulting in more or less offers being made? My guess is that it will be much more as it is so hard to depend on the late signing period. Need to think of it as a bonus.

Iowa has always done a great job in finding diamonds in the rough and shaping them up accordingly. That only takes you so far and they tend to do it at certain positions. While other schools are getting qb, running back and wr impactful transfers, we are looking at punter and defensive line. No doubt both are needs, but to really move the needle, we have to find a way to seriously move the bar in those position groups

Iowa has definitely sped things up. For the '18 class, Iowa had it's big official visit weekend in December. In this cycle, they moved it to the summer.

I think the staff will continue pushing to complete most of the class in the early signing period.

There was a bit of in-state jabbing a year or so ago about the number of offers being made. I don't see how to avoid making more and more offers earlier and earlier. It would be quite a novel recruiting tactic to wait and try to get flips, especially when nearly every recruit talks about the "relationships" with the coaches (who are unlikely to be there by the time he finishes his eligibility, but that is another matter). Like it or not, I think the staff has to become "more like the guys in Ames" in this regard.

I think each school needs to be comfortable with its approach. Iowa offers plenty of kids relative to what it ends up taking and is offering kids a lot earlier as well. It’s really a fluid process and one that continually changing and tweaked.

Iowa has landed two RB transfers in recent years with Butler and Sargent. Easley was a transfer at WR who did some nice things.

While I agree we need to improve those positions it’s just not a guarantee that there are guys out there at those positions. Iowa returns good experience at RB and WR, hopefully they can make strides as upperclassmen.

Those three gentlemen are not who I had in mind when I was talking about gamebreakers or difference makers. That is what is sorely needed and always has been under this staff

Butler could have been, he had back to back 1,300+ yard 10+ TD seasons at Nevada, injury cut his season short.

I have nothing to back this up, but my guess is you aren’t going to see a ton of impact grad transfer WRs. If you make it 4 years at your school as a WR and can’t find play time it’s likely because you aren’t that good. If you’re an ultra productive WR at a smaller school there’s isn’t as much importance on transferring up to a bigger school, if you have the tape and numbers, you’ll get your chance. Tons of WRs in the pros are smaller school guys.

It's a bit of a double-edged sword, but, all in all, I think the early signing period benefits us more than it hurts us.

Yes, you will see less last minute flips, but, the staff have intimated previously that many of those late flips were offered later in the process in an attempt to "slow play" them, with the intent to keep them under the radar. With the early signing period, slow playing becomes less important, allowing the staff to offer targets earlier.

A bigger adjustment, IMO, is the increased early declaration rate. A developmental program such as Iowa will get disproportionately hurt by the losses. The result is that the roster will shift to younger players, which puts more pressure on the staff to recruit players that require less development.

Thank you and thanks for reading.

To be clear, I haven’t been able to confirm if Abercrumbia is visiting. He won’t respond to me. That’s why a attributed it to Rivals.
