Last night was the start of the Minnesota state playoffs. DB Malik Rucker's Robbinsdale Cooper squad defeated Minneapolis South 49-0. Here are the games for the rest of the week:

Thursday:
WR Derrick Mitchell, Vashon (STL) at Desmet Jesuit (STL)

Friday:
WR Derrick Willies, Rock Island (IL) vs. Glenbard South (Glen Ellyn, IL)
DB Delano Hill, Cass Tech (Detroit) vs. U of Detroit Jesuit
OL Colin Goebel, Naperville (IL) North vs. Glenbard North (Glen Ellyn, IL)
DT Nathan Bazata, Howells (NE) at Clarkson/Leigh (NE)
DT Brant Gressel, Centerville (Dayton, OH) at Beavercreek (OH)
LB John Kenny, Carmel (IN) vs. Warren Central (Indianapolis)
QB Nic Shimonek, Mildred (Corsicana, TX) at Tolar (TX)
WR Andre Harris, Kirkwood (MO) vs. University City (MO)
OL Sean Welsh, Springboro (OH) vs. Xenia (OH)
TE Ike Boettger, Cedar Falls at Hempstead (Dubuque)
ATH Trevon Young, Lincoln (Des Moines) at Indianola
WR Matthew VandeBerg, Brandon Valley (SD) vs. Yankton (SD)

Saturday:
DB Solomon Warfield, St. Edward (Lakewood, OH) at Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati)

Game of the Week:
TE Jon Wisnieski, Dowling Catholic (WDM) at LS Tyler Kluver, Marshalltown--Tomorrow night's game features two Iowa commits and a pair of high powered offenses. Both teams have earned berths (earned being a relative term in Iowa 4A) to the playoffs, but a win would be huge for seeding.

Vashon got hammered tonight, taking a 55-14 loss. DeSmet has multiple D1 players, including 2014 4-star OT Andy Bauer.

I'll have to check in on Mitchell. I haven't heard much about him. That loss to DeSmell is odd to me. The parochials around here do well in hoops, but struggle with football.

Update on Andre Harris and Kirkwood.
The team made the USA top 25 this week.

They should win out easy this weekend and move on to the playoffs. This is the first time I think they have a chance ever. They've made it to the finals before but it was like the old days where the Big 10 would beat up on each other and a 16th ranked Northwestern squeaks into the Rose Bowl to play 2nd ranked USC or Washington. This time 'round is different. I think it's Kirkwood's first chance ever at pulling off a state championship in one of the "major" sports. The biggest comparable success was when Alvin Miller virtually single-handedly won enough events for Kirkwood to win the state track tournament.

Scores:
Cass Tech 26, U of Detroit Jesuit 2 FINAL
Dowling 3, Marshalltown 0 2ND
Springboro 7, Xenia 7 2ND
Carmel 14, Warren Central 7 HALF
Beavercreek 20, Centerville 7 HALF

One storyline to watch tonight: If what I'm reading is right, the Indianola-Lincoln winner will make the playoffs and loser will miss the playoffs. Could be a very emotional game for those teams.

Scores:
Springboro 20, Xenia 7 FINAL
Beavercreek 27, Centerville 21 FINAL
Dowling Catholic 37, Marshalltown 9 4TH
Cedar Falls 17, Hempstead 6 3RD
Indianola 17, Lincoln 7 HALF
Mildred 35, Tolar 12 HALF
Glenbard South 20, Rock Island 14 HALF
Glenbard North 21, Naperville North 7 HALF--2014 recruit Justin Jackson has 3 first half TDs. I expect him to get an offer from the Iowa coaches during his visit to Iowa City tomorrow.

Correction:
Brandon Valley vs. Yankton was last night. BV won 42-0.

Stunner in Indiana:
Warren Central 31, Carmel 24 FINAL-3OT

(Also in a stunner, "He who shall not be named" and Indianapolis Pike upset #1 Ben Davis.)

Glenbard South 41, Rock Island 28 FINAL
Dowling Catholic 46, Marshalltown 9 FINAL--Dowling wins division title and ensures 2 home games in the playoffs.
Glenbard North 21, Naperville North 14 FINAL
Mildred 56, Tolar 18 FINAL
Cedar Falls 31, Hempstead 12 FINAL
Indianola 33, Lincoln 14 FINAL--Lincoln's (and Trevon Young's) tumultuous season is over.
Howells-Dodge 34, Clarkson/Lehigh 8--FINAL

Ha, that's awesome. My mom went to Kirkwood HS.

He looked pretty good playing corner too. They threw at him a several times. He was never beat. He didn't always have position, but he was close enough to make the play...get an arm in there...or make the pick. Although, the pick was called back after they called him for PI. He did extend his arm, otherwise they probably don't call it as it was pretty underthrown. I didn't see the whole game, not sure how he did in the first half, but it was pretty low scoring.

I can't begin to describe how big this game is. It's like if Iowa and Iowa State played against each other exclusively in an extra bowl game two weeks after the end of the season for 100 years, and then somehow one year wound up playing each other in a game, with the winner winning their respective conference championship. Kirkwood wins 21-14, and plays on the road Saturday in a rematch of their failed finals bid against Rockwoods Summit from a few years ago. If they win, they go on to the semifinals. If they lose, they play Webster again on Thanksgiving. Otherwise, the JV teams play on "Turkey Day". There's Thanksgiving and Turkey Day around here. Two different things, that just happen on the same day.
