I'll be putting together my notes and thoughts in a couple of threads over the next couple of days. First I'll hit the QB battle.

Rudock - Has good anticipation and is accurate most times; very consistent when he's in rhythm. Does look overly-mechanical/robotic at times and will close his hips and tip where he's throwing too often. Very good command of offense in scrimmage portion. Timed most throws well; dropped in some throws over man turn defenders. Showed ability to adjust throws based on his targets height. Looks a bit pre-calculated/pre-determined with his reads at times; not sure how he'll perform under pressure and when things go off ******. Also can struggle to drive deep out/deep comeback throws, especially on the move. When he misses, he tends to miss big also.

Beathard - Strong arm. Not quite to as strong as JVB's but pretty close. Ball doesn't have great RPMs on it, may have issues gripping ball too tightly or some mechanical issues w/his wrist motion; Gets the ball out quick, with a tight arm motion. Shows ability to change velocity appropriately on shorter routes. Looked like a freshman during scrimmage portion; didn't look like he had great command in the huddle/under center. Had some procedural issues. Did keep the ball down on throws over the middle, did a decent job protecting the ball overall. Accuracy was pretty good overall. Looks raw during hurry-up drills; didn't get guys lined up quickly numerous times. Lot of physical talent, needs to grow up quick tho

Sokol - Best runner and athlete of three; shows good timing on his throws. Throwing motion is a little long at times; Keeps his eyes down the field with pressure in his face most times. Lacks a big arm but usually is able to mitigate it with anticipation/timing. Will take some risks and throw into some traffic, showed up a few times. Struggles with his touch on the deep ball at times. Looks very good on throws up the seam, does very well between hashes in general. Looked good rolling out and throwing on the move most times. Looked a little uncomfortable in the pocket at times in terms of his feet, little choppy when things develop slowly.

If Iowa played a game next week, they'd probably play at least 2 of the 3 QBs. Not a lot of separation right now. Each has some good things they do, but all three also have issues that show up. Rudock has been around the longest and seems to have the best command on the offense. Best command generally means the fewest mistakes; so based on that Rudock would be the starter in that hypothetical game. This battle is far from over and each guy needs to evolve their game to win the job for the long haul. The good news is that Iowa looks like to have some depth on the OL and in the back-field; should add up to some success on the ground.

Translation, run the football on first down, run the football on second down, PA/waggle on third down. Being creative will be throwing on first down or wheel route out of the backfield by cazeri or Bullock. Yes, Greg Davis loves the wheel route.

Based on your read their Game, it sounds like Sokol has a leg up in the running for #1. At least judging with GD's idea of a QB that can improvise when reads break down. The comment about being the best athlete of the three, would this lead one to believe he has a better chance separate himself?

Ruddock likely get the nod but wouldn't surprise me if Sokol gets his chance at some point. For any of them, throwing too much at them could be problematic.keep it sime for them for a bit

You really think KF's would alternate between 2 QB's in a real game?

It's hard to tell how much the running ability will play into the decision. Ferentz has said many times he's not opposed to a dual threat QB but I just don't let see him letting his starting QB have 10 carries a game. The ability to scramble and sustain drives could be a way for Sokol to differentiate himself from the other two though. The athleticism comment is more a reference to his change of direction ability and nifty footwork in traffic.

Purely as passers from the pocket, in this practice Sokol was probably 3rd of the three. As far as seeing the field, I'm not sure I've seen enough of any of them to make a distinction there. All 3 looked like they had issues with recognition, which isn't a surprise given their lack of experience. Overall a lot more questions than answers at this point and it will probably still be that way for quite a while.

I think it's bleak if we put them in schemes where they have to win games. I think we have to give them as simple of reads possible, Iftar is possible. I think it would be bad to expect any one of them to be Dan persa. Keep it basic for them as long as we can. Use the run, use simple patterns.

Not a whole lot of expectation from the QB position or the offense in general, they will probably do enough to get 6 or 7 victories, then 2014 becomes very interesting.

Well I'm glad that Kirk let Rudock at least get his feet wet last season. Oh, wait...

Been thinking about this, lately ... What if Rudock comes in and lights it up? By "lights it up", I mean relatively, as in, if he can just be average -- a rating around 130, 60% completions, 15 / 10.

Would I just be happier about it as a fan (because it should lead to a more productive offense, which, hopefully, means more W's) or would it just further cement my skepticism about Kurk's "playing the guys that give the best chance to win" and refuel the disgust I had for the QB situation last season?

Hoping whoever the QB is, KF / GD are more willing to adapt their personnel strategy as performance dictates.

I hate to say it but I really hope that either Sokol or Beathard are the guy for that reason. Sorry Jake.
