Hawkeye fan for 55 years

Today is my 64th birthday and I can remember back to when I started being a Hawkeye fan at age 10. That was in 1956 and some memorable things happened that year. Can any of you remember them?

My first memories are from around 1960. Minnesota with Sandy Stephens as QB. Iowa had Larry Ferguson, Wilburn Hollis. Minnesota beat Iowa that year for Iowa's only loss, if I remember correctly

The first Iowa game I ever watched was against Tulsa in 1997, when Banks went absolutely crazy. I was 7 years old, and I still have the #6 Tim Dwight jersey that I got at the Hawk Shop that day.

The next game I saw was the Northwestern game in 2000, when we pulled the upset. Still got the #3 Khalil Hill jersey I got THAT day.

Then I watched the Alamo Bowl on TV in 2001.

The next Iowa game I saw was Minnesota in 2002. After having missed out on almost the entire season that year, I decided I didn't want to miss something that special ever again. Since that Minnesota game, I've either watched, listened to, or been in attendance for all but one game. I take a lot of pride in that, only missing one game in 7 years. And the one I missed: Syracuse 2007. I had a date with a girl that I really liked, and we went to a movie. But give me credit, I did try to listen to the game with a radio and headphones in the theater. Alas, no reception.

My first Iowa game was in 1962 and the last one attended was this year's Orange Bowl victory (a big thrill for an old man like me). I have missed very few home games since 1962 -- there is nothing like Iowa football on autumn saturdays in the big brick stadium named after a true hero, Nile Kinnick.

My Dad saw all of the games in 1956 and never tired talking about that team. The capper was the 6-0 win against Ohio State in November, clinching the Rose Bowl. That team really reminds me of our 2009 team -- great defense and a lot of close games.

By coincidence, we play Ohio State in Iowa City in November this year. The 2010 game could be as big as that 1956 game so long ago.

And I can't wait! Just think how electric it will be if both teams are 11-0. It could even be a #1-#2 matchup if 'Bama finds a way to stumble somewhere. My dad talks about the '85 Michigan game alot, and I would love to experience that kind of atmosphere.

I'm one of those messed up familys.....Mom went to Iowa...dad went to Wisky and the ISu for his masters. Lived in Ames for several years up until 7th grade. Went to many ISU bball games in the Orr/Grayer/Hornacek days and Hilton was a fun place when Manning and Kansas came to town....or King and Okie made a stop...I was there for the famous ISU/Iowa game when Rhodes went off. My first real Hawkeye experience was the Iowa/Minny football game in the early 90's.....yeah that really cold snowy one....been hooked since then

1968 - Iowa v. Northwestern. Knot hole section. Ed Podolak runs for 286 yards, sets a Big Ten single game rushing record. Sort of aware of the Hawkeyes before then, but, signed, sealed and delivered Hawk fan from that point forward.

The 1985 IA-Mich game was awesome, but frankly the 2008 IA-Penn St game was just as good, and the 2009 IA-Mich St game, and the Orange Bowl game, etc. etc.

Hopefully there will be many thrilling games next year!!

My dad attended the 1939 Iowa Minnesota game. Minnesota (defending national champion) led Iowa 9-0 late in the 4th quarter. Kinnick led Iowa on two impossible long scoring drives to win the game. They carried Kinnick off the field -- at that time Minnesota was a juggernaut and our number 1 rival -- it was truly an impossible win for Iowa. Kinnick really clinched the Heisman that day (Iowa had not defeated Minnesota in a very long time).

Dad said that it was so loud that you couldn't believe it -- Iowa City celebrated for days, and had a huge pep rally for the students in front of Old Capitol on Monday after the game.

It is amazing to me that memories from 1939 can still be so vivid.

There is nothing like college football -- nothing even comes close in all of sports.
