Hawk Stock: What Kind of Year did Vandenberg Have?

Thank you john. I see so many people compare the two and give stanzi the edge but they always base it off stanzis senior year to JVBs junior. When you compare the two junior years, JVB wins.

And if Vandy can make the improvements like Stanzi did.... watch out!

yes vandy wins when it comes to stats but i would still take stanzi and his leadership over vandy. you can't overlook stanzis ability to stay calm in rough situations. even if they were brought on by himself. i remember at one point with stanzi, thinking well if he throws a pic we'll get the win. i know it sounds dumb bit it almost looked like making a mistake calmed stanzi down compared to making vandy nervous.

Stanzi's junir year wasn't about great stats, it was about his leadership ability. He never got rattled and would get right back up and lead the team to a win. I think he tried so hard not to turn it over his senior year that he looked scared at times like Vandenberg did this year.

really? we couldn't get a stop when we needed it against isu or Minn. with 09's D we win two out of those 3.

I understand that we didn't get the stops, but the fact still remains that we didn't need the '09 D to win those games.

Good write up, wrong conclusion. Stanzi was the better QB. He was clutch, and a leader (see Tebow). I'll ask this question, if you plug JVB into the 2009 lineup, do we go 9-0, and then win the Orange Bowl?

To many people get caught up in stats, stats, stats. Its wrong. Look at Jake Christensen's TD to INT ratio. It was much better than Stanzi's. Stanzi had those intangibles that are hard to find. He was calm in almost every situation. Going all the way back to his sophomore year when he rallied the team in the 4th quarter against #3 rated Penn St. Again, that was as a sophomore. Don't give me stats. Give me 4th quarter production when the game is on the line and Ill take Stanzi everytime. Vandenberg has yet to show outside of the Pitt. game this year that he is a 4th quarter clutch player. He has struggled in those instances.

I watched the replay of the pitt game late last night on the big screens of the sports book in one of Las Vegas' finest. It was late, and myself and one other stranger were watching. he was not a Hawk fan, but commented with a "why didn't Iowa do better this year? based on watching the play of JVB". He was right of course, because it sure appeared he was not as confident later in the year than he was in that game. His passing and decisions seemed to improve, but his game situation ability seemed to be really on for that Pitt game vs late in the season.

I think he will improve with maturity this off season and bring more to the plate next year. I hope anyway.

BTW, Hawks on a "big frigging wall screen" like that was awesome. I only wish the book would have been open to take my action on it.;)

I would agree that right now, Stanzi is the better of the two! Next year I am hoping we all change our tune. If this is the case we should have a great season. Will hurt losing Mr. McNutt tho.

Vandenberg has better arm strength and accuracy.... Stanzi had better mobility, touch and leadership.

Put them together and that would be an awesome QB.

Potentially Vandenberg can be a better player - but he has to play much better on the road and not take phantom sacks.

Skill wise he is superior but for all the raving about his confidence he lacks poise in the pocket and panics - especially on the road.
