The hawk defense had a great goal line stand late in the first half of the Rutgers game. The excitement may have helped the offense click and take off on something like an 8 play 99 yard drive that was beautiful and not conservative.
Late in the game the hawk defense made that critical 3rd down and short and then 4th down and short stops to take the ball for good from Rutgers. Great play and the players made great penetration to disrupt blocking and hit the ball carrier behind the LOS.
Is it also maybe the case that the defensive scheme on most plays is to first read the opponents blocks rather than to charge and penetrate? I wonder if part of giving up more running yards stems from not tyring to penetrate the LOS at the snap but read the play.
Anybody who has looked at the replays and who know the schemes have any thoughts?
