Have we ever landed a 5 star recruit for basketball?

Just curious. I wasn't even aware of stars until about 10-15 years ago and really didn't follow recruiting until about 8 years ago If anybody knows I'd appreciate the help.

About Steve Alford's second or third year at Iowa, he landed the nation's #3 rated recruiting class. Jared Reiner and Glenn Worley were the gems (they were either 4 star or 5 star), and a kid transferred in out of Kentucky as well. Plus Brody Boyd. Luke Recker came in that year or the year before, and he was a 4 or 5 star as well...I remember watching him in the McDonalds All America game's dunk contest.

I think the kid from Kentucky was Ryan Hogan. I was thinking Worley was a 4 star but I could be wrong. Thanks for the information.

since 2002, per rivals, iowa has had 3 4* players - two on the current team, and that kid who transferred back to TN to be closer to his ailing father. Tyler Smith. All the rest - 3 star, a couple 2 star.

i can not imagine that al lorenzen was a 5 star player.

well he certainly wasn't a 5 star player, but I'm not so sure he wasn't a 5 star recruit.

nicely done! :)

#4 in 1984 - where is that coming from? do you have a list - would be fun to look at -

i agree, however, that being both parade and mcd's aa puts him high in the class and likely would be a 5 in today's rankings.

If I recall correctly, I think Al had back problems that kept him from reaching his potential.

But it's been a long time ago.
don't remember that, you may be thinking of Jess Settles. That dude had like 10 years of eligibility because of his back

anybody know when they started using stars, I know Rivals started its recruiting service in 1998

Al Lorenzen, Iowa--They call him the Vanilla Gorilla in Iowa, where he`s probably the most celebrated high school player to come from the state since Murray Wier in the 1940s. Lorenzen almost got lost in the coaching shuffle when Lute Olson bolted for Arizona, but Raveling is glad to have him. ``With his maturity, he`s 18 going on 30,`` Raveling said. Despite being the sixth man, the burly 6-8 forward is Iowa`s most productive player. He`s averaging 7 points and 4 rebounds and is shooting 51 percent while playing only 17 minutes a game. ``The pace and the speed has been the biggest adjustment,`` said Lorenzen, whose six straight points as a reserve helped kill an Illinois rally earlier this season. ``

Ricky Davis was DEFINITELY a 4 or 5 star recruit, out of Davenport.

Played 1 year for Iowa, then to NBA
