Has the offense changed in 30 years

Saw the blog on Hayden's 1st 13 years to Kirk's 13 years and I know KOK was not the favorite of many on this board, but to me the offense hasn't changed much in 30 years.

Differences.

TE stood up in the Fry era
Jailbreak screen in the Kirk era

Similarities

Run to set up the pass
Pro style offense
Play action passing game
TE's have always played a significant role
look for balance in the pass to run ratio
Fullback's in majority of formations
Shotgun in obvious passing
zone blocking

Looking forward to what this year might bring.

The idea that we run to set up the pass is a common misconception. And we aren't as balanced in the run to pass ratio as most think.

Blocking scheme is different. Traps and pulls vs zone. Threw to the backs more with Saunders, bell, harmon, et al. More draws then too. Balance was the objective w/both

Last year we ran to set up the punt.

hilarious! literally laughed out loud

we run to control clock and hopefully win field position battle. with a weaker than usual defensive line which is the achille's to iowa's defense, u want to keep ur weakness off the field

Hayden's offense (he did call the plays if I remember correctly) was far more aggresive. He always had tricks up his sleeve for for good teams. FB wheel routes, fake pitch & throw, reverse passes, fake FG, stuff like that. He also wasn't afraid to stay aggresive when Iowa was ahead. He had a rep for running it up against the likes of NW & ISU.

He also threw everything out including kitchen sink when Iowa was trying to get back into a game. The Rose Bowl against Washington was borderline crazy playcalling in the 2nd half with reverses and throwbacks.

I remember he also had his QBs back drop back straight instead of the tradtional drop with see with a sideways backpeddel. He felt the QBs could see the field better that way.

I also though Hayden was more aggresive in terms of getting his best players of the field. Dwight was a 3rd string RB behind Shaw & Banks so he moved to WR. Harmon & Saunders were both WRs early in careers when they were behind the likes of Gill & Stewart & Bell then moved to RB.

But overall both eras had a prostyle offense.

There was a year, (2003?) where Iowa didn't use the run to set up the pass. All the running backs were down by October, Iowa finished 128th in rushing that year. And went 10-1. (9-2?)
