Where were you 24 years ago this afternoon?

I was at Kinnick Stadium - a 10 year old standing next to my mom, dad & brother watching Rob Houghtlin split the uprights!

Iowa 12, Michgan 10
10/19/85

Living in Coralville at the time, watching the game on tv with the family. One of the best sports moments of all time.

In the North end zone, but well to the right of the goal post, sophomore in college, shitfaced and delious.

Nobody took a breath the entire game. Then when Iowa began the last drive the tension was as palpable as I've ever witnessed at Kinnick. We had just been through this two weeks earlier against Sparty, but that was tame by comparison.

Early in that final drive Long threw a pass that should have been intercepted by Brad Cochran, and from our vantage point it looked like he did. We died inside...for about five seconds.

Waiting out the two time outs seemed to take hours. It was like come on, our botas were empty, we had more partying to do.

It would have been a shame to lose that game after dominating the yardage and time of possession the way we did. We just could not shake loose with a big play. Michigan had an unbelievable defense in terms of not allowing touchdowns and they ended up keeping us out of the end zone as well, and Illinois the next week. Perhaps Michigan should have gone for the jugular when they last had the ball, but Bo was probably thinking that a field goal would put them up four and put us to bed.

We will never know.

I mean we did score a touchdown but there was a terrible call that didn't give it to us ;)

I was 4 years old and have no memory of this live, but I watched the VHS my dad had a few dozen times!

Actually, I had been married a year adapting to married life, but not without games like these. My wife knew that Iowa athletics were important. We were living in Waverly, and we were at a local establishment, called the Tallcorn Tavern. I remember it like yesterday.

Helverson, who lost a TD the week before at Wisconsin when he collided with one of those H-shaped goalposts, was robbed of another one here.

It had rained all night and through the morning, finally stopping an hour or two before kickoff. Helverson's foot shot up a spray of water as he drug it INSIDE THE END LINE. I think the officials got confused when they saw the water spray up and assumed that it had to come from the end line.

How Chuck even saw Helverson in the first place was remarkable. It was similar to that two point conversion where Adrian Martinez connected with Warner in the Nebraska game last year.

Scott Helverson, ironically, went on to become an NFL official for a while. In 2004, Nate Kaeding missed a potentially game winning field goal for San Diego that would have advanced them past the Jets in the playoffs. Scott Helverson was the back judge and one of the two officials standing underneath the goalpost.
