Happier with a 5 then 4 seed?

I for one am anyway. For one I'm not scared of either team they'll end up playing. For two this team is built for tourny style ball. They are deeper and just keep coming at you. Can play inside out. Their confidence is through the roof right now. I think waiting that extra day to play wouldn't have benefited us. I also think this team can get rusty. I'd rather they keep the momentum going and play. Wisky is about the only team I have little confidence in us beating. The rest I think have shown are vulnerable and we are as hot as anyone.

In fact putting myself in the other teams shoes I'd say outside Wisky, Iowa is the one school nobody wants to be lined up against. With White hitting 3s now it's just a huge game changer. If he'd have been doing that all year long holy smokes...

We need to finish off wwhoever we play on Thursday quickly. Need to be able to sit AW &JU as much as possible... We are fairly deep, but to do 4 games in 4 days is tough...

I totally agree with the OP... I think we got a great seed and the way its sits now, our match-ups are in our favor for the first two rounds for sure. The only thing is we will have to play Wisky to get to the championship and that is also ok because it gets us ready to play the best teams in the NCAA tourney. We as a program haven't been this excited for post season play for a long time and I for one want to enjoy every minute of it.

I don't understand the seeding.. I would rather be a 6 than a 5.. The teams we draw in the first game are dangerous. They each have a couple of players that can go off on you. To top it off,you are in the same bracket as Wiscy..OSU has it much better in their bracket. Am I missing something about the 5??

Would have rather been on the other side of the Wisconsin bracket.
A 3 or 6 would have better than a 4 or 5.

Between a 4 or 5, the 4 is the obvious answer, because of the double-bye.
Beating either Penn State or Nebraska will not increase our NCAA seed, but it could lower it.

Out of a 3, 4, 5 or 6, IMO, getting a 5 was the worst of the four seedings.

I want another shot at Purdue. They beat us by 4 earlier in the year with Aaron White sitting after hurting his shoulder. We owe those bastards.

Beating them should make us a 6 seed in the NCAA's. I don't see anybody beating Wisconsin though. A loss to them will not hurt us. Go Hawks!

I don't know, I think I'd rather go face PSU/Nebraska and Purdue than Minnesota and MSU in the first couple matchups. Granted we may get further in the tourney if we don't have to play Wisconsin until the championship but I think the downside of that would be facing them when we are a bit gassed and getting run off the court.

If only looking at the 4 or 5 seed as the OP suggests, it is obvious that the 4 seed is the best.

Iowa would gain zero by beating PSU/NEB, and losing would drop them to a 8 seed. If Iowa has to play Wisconsin on Saturday, I'd rather be playing the 2nd game in 2 days rather than 3rd in 3 days.

I would have liked to have played on Friday instead of Thursday - not worried about rust due to 1 extra day off - I find it funny that people were worried about our legs this past week against IU, but now are worried about rust.. LOL.

That said, I don't have any real problem with playing that extra game, just so long as Iowa doesn't lose to PSU/Nebby and end up dropping to that 8/9 line for the big dance.. Not that I am all that worried about it, but getting the double bye guarantees (90% anyway) that a loss would be a Top 4-5 seed opponent. This is the main reason I'd have preferred a 4, plus not having to play 4-in-4 to win the BTT.

As for the match ups, I'm pretty happy with the way it shook out. PSU/Nebby, and then Purdue.. I'd rather have that than Minny, NW, MSU, etc. I know we just beat NW by 17, but I still am glad we don't have to play them again. Iowa hasn't had a great track record against NW, and they're playing much better than someone like Nebby or PSU, IMO. Minnesota is jekyll & hyde - never know which team will show up: The one that won @MSU, or the one who lost at home to PSU.

Wisconsin isn't ideal if you're looking to win the BTT, but nothing to lose there.

Agreed! Have wanted rematch with Purdue, all along and expected it would most likely happen with Iowa #5.

Early on, I wanted it to be the 5. Didn't expect Hawks to win final 6 and thought they could use another win or 2 in BTT to lock down the NCAA bid. Felt the 5, against Purdue, gave them best chance for that. Also, wasn't sure Hawks would do so well at the 4, having to sit 5 days before playing again.

Now, the dance is a lock and don't need the W's, so wish they coulda got the 4. Not so much to be fresh, but to avoid a slip up against Penn State, which, all of a sudden I'm very nervous will happen. (Hey, I'm a long-time Hawk fan. It's been a great run to finish but history tells me it's time for a stumble.)

Defy history and keep rollin', Hawks!!

I expect PSU to beat Nebby, but that's not necessarily a given, either. I think Nebby has mailed it in, but I also saw a couple of Alford's teams who had seemingly quit, but once the BTT started, looked like they decided they didn't want the season to end just yet, either. So we'll see.

This is the next item on Fran's bucket list IMO - make a nice run in the BTT, rather than win one game, or lose right away.

I just think its great to get invited to the NCAA toury again; no play in game that never feels like the NCAA. Fun to watch, players seem to be having fun - carry that into the tourny and win the first (second) round and it will officially feel like the program is at least back to the Tom Davis era! Lick could not even say NCAA Tourny at Iowa and Alford was exposed in the first round every time (2) that he did make the tourny. I've been hard on coach and some players due to frustration over the last decade but its nice to look forward to March with the Hawkeyes dancing...

4 seed by far. There is very very little to gain by playing PSU/Nebby on Thursday and quite a bit to lose. Right now even NW has a better RPI than both of their Thursday opponents. Plus its nowhere near a given that Iowa will win on Thursday.

It just takes a hot Petteway/Shields or Newbill/Gardner and an off night for Iowa and suddenly their confidence is shot, they're at home watching basketball all weekend instead of playing it, and then going into an 8/9 game with the winner taking on a 1 seed. That would be a doom and gloom scenario at this point for Iowa. That Thursday game is a huge trap game

The 4 seed is much much much better. There shouldn't be a bad loss available by that point.

The Tom Davis special, we're back!

I see the glass half empty way of looking at it. But I'm not scared of them. I think they should be scared of us. Who's playing better then Iowa has the last 2 weeks? Even with MG not scoring much and Jok not doing a whole lot we've been killing people. I think White has just found "it." That same magic Gatens caught at the end of his senior year. And he's playing out of his mind. Iowas front line is just a mismatch nightmare for most teams other then Wisky. I say bring it on. The extra game at the end only matters if they get there to play it and since they'd play Wisky before that one....

I agree with most of your sentiments and hear what you're saying, but I have to agree with mopkins - Iowa has little to gain and a lot more to lose by playing a game with Nebby/PSU on Thursday. But just as long as the team shows up the way its been these past few weeks, it won't matter.
