Gus Johnson phrase gets 15-year-old in trouble

I think the saddest part of this is the kids parents saying it's not his fault. Yes, the phrase is on video games and TV, but that doesn't make it right. I don't think he should have any long term consequences to this if he has learned his lesson, but to say it is not his fault just doesn't sit right with me. It was wrong, he should be punished, everyone move on. Parents have to be able to punish their children.

I think this story is overblown. It should be a hey kid don't do this, and here's why, done, next. Instead there will be this great debate over whether or not he was being racist or politically incorrect or whatever. It's actually very annoying.

Is your point that the story is overblown or is it the district's reaction to the kid's use of the phrase "getting-away-from-the-cops speed"? Because I actually found the story kind of funny and am glad it was posted by Yahoo! Sports. Good lesson to others about being careful what things to say. The kid shouldn't have used it, but I can nearly guarantee that wasn't the most offensive thing anyone at that game heard that day or that week for that matter. You're correct, the "discipline" should have been just a comment to the kid, "Hey, don't say stuff like that," and move on.

The story was kind of funny, but what's annoying is the parents suing the school, and people threatening the kid on fb.

Hmm.. interesting story. I hadn't heard about Gus' remarks until now. Has Gus Johnson been reprimanded for this term that he used? Just curious. Just because you're African-American doesn't mean you can use racist terms, right? And it blows my mind that the term is used in Madden with how PC our society has become. I personally don't have a problem with it, but I'm just very surprised there hasn't been a bigger stink raised about the term being used by Gus and in the Madden game.

Why is the phrase racist? Do white people not run from the cops?

Yes.

The story was kind of funny, but what's annoying is the parents suing the school, and people threatening the kid on fb.

And yes. People get ridiculously stupid over trivial stuff in this day and age. And many parents can't seem to admit that THEIR children make mistakes. It should have been a relatively low-key teachable moment over a small misstep.

This is the 1st I've heard of this phrase. Here are my random thoughts:
Why does a middle school fb game need an announcer?
Damn glad I don't live in Sandusky. Yikes! What an unfortunate name for a town.

I'm pretty sure 1Hawkeye1 just said it all. Lets all just move on and remember that white people can't say things that black people can.

Sorry, didn't mean that the term itself was racist, but that it seems like it may be used in a racist way. From the article...

"In the meantime, the boy and his parents insist that the high schooler learned the phrase from the uber-popular Madden 12 video game, which frequently will declare that a player has "get-away-from-the-cops speed," on touchdown runs, particularly when the player in question is of African American descent...."

And keep in mind, I haven't played the new Madden game yet, so I don't know if that statement is true or not, but why is it used particularly when the player is of African American descent? I personally don't have a problem with it. Hell, I've ran away from the Cops before and I'm white, but it just seems weird that they would use it in the game is all.

How long before a Jesse Jackson type group goes after EA Sports if this is true?

Lol. Exactly. I'm surprised there hasn't been an uproar considering how politically correct our society has become. That's what I was getting at in a roundabout way. And for the record, I can't stand how freaking PC we've become. Don't offend anybody, or they might go cry to their Mommy!

I found that a little far fetched - the "particularly when the player is of AA descent" part. I would kinda doubt if you could look at the Madden 25 source you would find code like:

if (ballCarrier.getSkinTone.equals(SkinTone.BLACK)
{
// Have Gus use "gettin away from cops" line
}
else
{
// Have Gus use some other catch phrase
}

And......in this PC world, here is what I got for the video when I went to pull up the link, "We're so sorry! We're no longer able to display this content".

Here is the thing though, if people are going to get all hung up in the context. Last time I checked, isn't Gus Johnson black?

Wouldn't Gus be suing EA if he felt that he was being portrayed as a racist, but then again, is it okay because he is black?

It really floors me how overblown everything gets and I see zero issue with the phase itself.

I despise the over-the-top political correctness that is being rammed down America's throat the past several years. The Internet makes it far too easy for someone to pretend they're outraged about something just to get their 15 minutes of fame. It's disgusting.
