Greenberg Stepping Back Up to the Plate

7 years later, Miami Marlins give Adam Greenberg another at bat - ESPN

I remember watching this when it happened. Greenberg was one of two guys called up to Chicago from AA Tennessee along with Matt Murton. If I recall correctly there was a lot of buzz around Greenberg. Unfortunately it all came to a quick end when the first and only pitch he faced in the majors was a fast ball that beaned him in the back of the head. He basically never recovered and just became another blurb in the long history of the Cubs. I think it's a good story that he is trying to make a comeback, even though it's appears it's more for personal redemption than it is a true comeback.

Here's an ESPN story from back in 2007 with some more details. I was watching when this happened too. Scary stuff.

From another article --> Van Dusen feels Greenberg's pain - MLB - ESPN

Here's the list of 7 players who were HBP in their only AB. Greenberg is the only one to get hit by the 1st pitch.

Unlucky 7
Players who have been hit by a pitch in their only major league plate appearance:
NAME, TEAM, YEAR, GAMES PLAYED
• Abraham Wade, N.Y. Giants, 1907, 1
• Charlie Faust, N.Y. Giants, 1911, 2
• Harvey Grubb, Cleveland, 1912, 1
• Cyrus Sol Malis, Phi., 1934, 1
• Fred Van Dusen, Phi., 1955, 1
• Adam Greenberg, Chi. Cubs, 2005, 1
• John Rheinecker, Texas, 2006, 21

where's the call for John Rheinecker, whoever that is?

I'm happy for Greenberg, I was watching live when it happened ... hope he rips a single up the middle

I am not a big fan of this as it is a publicity stunt. Greenberg hopes to get a spring training invite he should get it because he deserves one, not because of a stunt like this. Thousands of former minor league players can only dream of being able to put on a big league uniform and step into the batters box. Granted most would not care for getting beaned in the head but never the less he got to that point on his own merit. He was able to recover from his injuries and have a decent minor league career, but was not good enough to make it back to the bigs. If I was the opposing pitcher I would take my slowest pitch and just nail him with it.

Rheinecker was a pitcher who actually played parts of 2 years with the Rangers. He played in 44 games and started 20 of them. There is a huge list of AL pitchers that never got a plate appearance because of the DH rule.

Well, it's supposed to be RA Dickey (Starting anyway), so it will be interesting what he throws to Greenberg. Will Greenberg be sitting on a knuckler which is tough to hit? Or, will Dickey groove a pitch for him? Or, will Greenberg hit later in the game and Dickey is not in the game anymore.

It would be hilarious if Dickey hit him with one of those knucklers. Dickey has hit 9 players this year so anything is possible.

I think the Mets should sign Valerio De Los Santos to pitch against him. :D

That would be interesting. Greenberg already faced him in the minors/semi pro ball to exercise that demon. :)

Man I hope he gets a base knock.

Is it just me or does that main guy of the campaign look like Matthew Mcconaughey?
