Good to see Wagner get in early

He gave us a spark today with his rebounding, toughness and athleticism. 4 points and 4 rebounds in brief action in the first half.

Behind Adam he is our next best physical player down low. He could have helped us against Iowa St (0 minutes) and especially against Maryland in the 2nd half (basically 0 minutes) as they hurt us inside with their offensive rebounding.

I know Fran loves Uhl and his offensive potential, but if we are going to make a run in the post season we are going to need Wagner's physicality, especially against some good power forwards. Now is the time to give Wagner more minutes for experience and development for the next time Woody gets into foul trouble.

Still can't understand the lack of PT against Maryland's bigs...

Agree. I really liked the lineup out there of MG, Jok, Wagner Uhl, and Uthoff. That's an athletic front line with 3 shooters (should be 4 but MG for whatever reason can't shoot this year outside 15 ft still) Wagner is going to be a stud. Wish he had more of an offensive game but maybe that'll come.

Wagner looked better offensively yesterday. If he can develop even just a little on the offensive end by the end of the season, he should be able to provide some big minutes. I definitely like his toughness inside, and he's a real weapon on the 1-2-2 press with his athleticism. The one foul he picked up in the second half making a play for the ball was good to see. Not the foul, but the aggressiveness. Fran wasn't upset about that foul at all, from what it looked like.

Oh yeah I agree how could anyone be upset about fouls of that nature? There are dumb silly fouls and then there are some that are worth the risk. I love his game a lot. He was so so close to picking off that one pass to the sideline where if he'd have gotten it he'd have had a breakaway. The front line with him and Cook on the blocks along with Uhl will be pretty darn formidable I'd say. Iowa is here to stay

I like Wagner a lot. I know he is a freshman but he is already a man.

His body is definitely Big 10 ready. Outsiders probably don't see how good he already is and how much potential is there. But those of us that watch every game know how good he's going to be...next year. He will likely see a bump in minutes and stats similar to Marble's freshman to sophomore year.

I like Wagner and he was good today... I just have concerns in where these pieces fit moving forward.

Specifically who is our future at the 5?

Wagner has the Big 10 body but even if he contiued to add strength... at 6'7" he can't play that role.

Uhl may have the size/length but I'm not sure I want him bulking up too much. I see his future similar to Uthoffs as a long 4 that creates match up problems. He's actually listed at 6'9" 215 lbs, which is the same height as Uthoff but weighs 6 pounds less.

Tyler Cook is 6'8" so I would put him as a 4 spot as well.
Dale Jones is listed as 6'7".

We may not need a 7 footer but I'm concerned with 6'9" being our tallest defender and that being a guy who only weights 220 lbs. I guess it will be interesting because we may have an issue matching up but on the flip side we can be a nightmare matchup as other teams bigs may have to match up with Uhl and he's done a fairly decent job capitalizing on those type of mismatches this year.

I think the Kreiner kid coming in is listed at 6'8 or 6'9. But his game seems to be more perimeter oriented too. So yeah there's no Woodbury/Oleseni on the horizon. But I think they'll just play a faster more uptempo style then they already are. They'll play more zone D and press like they have been too. Playing that 1-2-2 press slows down the other teams O a lot to where the shot clock is under 15 to 12 seconds in the half court. That really limits the other teams traditional big guys from having an offensive impact (other then offensive rebounds)

Good points...

In regards to Kreiner, I think he will play inside. I've reffed a few of his AAU games and I don't think I've seen him attempt a single 3. He runs the floor well and posts up hard.

I've seen a video of some of his high school games that showcased him hitting from outside but I just didn't see anything like that in the games that I had him but it was probably better competition than he sees night in and night out of his high school games.

Uthoff defends well inside. Cook, Wagner, Uhl, Kreiner and Baer will do it by committee...using athleticism and long arms. Teams will have to break our press first. And then their post has to guard one of these guys when they're on defense. That could be entertaining.

It doesn't matter how tall the top of your head is as much as it matters how tall your hand is with your arm up. Uhl has long arms so he's probably closer to a 6'11" type player. I think our front court is in really good hands for the next few years.

I'm much more concerned about Uhl's lankiness than his height/length. He just isn't strong enough right now to really hang with better PF/C's in the conference defensively (see: the way Maryland's bigs ate him up when Woody was on the bench). That can change over the offseason, but until it does change, he'll be a liability defensively in that position.

I'm not saying there is no reason to be concerned at all, but just because a guy has 1 bad game against a really good team doesn't mean he can't hang. He did good against Purdue and MSU. He won't be as good as Woody on defense but he will probably be better on offense. If it can be a wash it's a win for us.

Fran will have a lot of interchangeable parts next year. Kriener and Bohannon are probably the only 2 guys that will play 1 position exclusively...5 and 1 respectively. Positions will be fluid.

1 - Williams/Bohannon/Moss
2 - Jok/Ellingson/Flemming
3 - Uhl/Baer/Hutton
4 - Jones/Wagner
5 - Cook/Kriener

I have no idea if Pemsl beats someone out or is a RS candidate. I see a lot of length and athleticism and quite a few 3 point shooters.

I listened to Mac McCausland during his usual Monday slot on KGYM today. I don't know if he still attends some practices like he did years ago, but I have found his analysis pretty good this year and he is always positive toward the players and team.

So today he opined that the roster will look different next year. I think he was implying that some guys might be leaving possibly due to lack of playing time this year. Wasn't sure if he meant player(s) were unhappy, or it was telling that he/they weren't getting more minutes. He went on to answer the host's question about next year's point guard by saying he thinks Iowa needs to go find one. One that can really play defense. I got the impression he wasn't impressed with the PG's on the bench. Like i said I don't know how connected he still is to the program but he is KGYM's go-to guy for Iowa basketball. ??

I just found his comments interesting. The host left it open for him to praise Williams as he was the focus, but he seemed to punt. For what it's worth.

If he says they need to go find a point guard it means he is really sure someone will leave or it means he had no idea what he's talking about since we have no open scholarships.

Sounded like the former. He is tuned in well enough at least to know the schollie issue. ☺

Sounds like it then. I don't know who would be in position to want to leave with so many minutes graduating. The red shirt guys would have left at semester. That leaves Williams and Fleming who aren't getting minutes. Williams is looking like the starting point guard and Fleming looks like he's having more fun that anyone else on the team. Ellingson would be a possibility I guess.

Or maybe it was just Mac's wishful thinking because he has doubts. Who knows? I don't recall the radio guy following up.

No one should be surprised if 1 or even 2 guys were to transfer. Such a long roster with supposed talent. It happens.

Who was the Juco PG who transfered after one year here? I can't recall. How soon we forget.

Williams looked like a liability out there in the limited time I've seen him. Here's to hoping for A LOT of off-season growth.
