Good Rose Bowl Question

Someone else brought this up, but suppose OSU goes to the Title game and we, ordinarily, go to the Rose Bowl. Everyone knows the new rules requires a non-AQ team to take our place presuming they are ranking in the top 14 (a no brainer this year). But what happens if USC wins the Pac10? Does the next up Pac10 team take their spot? Or could the non-AQ team actually take the Pac10 spot and we would still get to play in the Rose? Not that I would ever complain about Miami or the Orange Bowl, but I would prefer this to a repeat trip

no idea, but helluva question

best guess: yes, the Rose would love to match us against Boise State

Nah, BS has a good shot at the NC. It'd be Iowa vs TCU or Pac-10 "champ" (i don't see USC winning Pac 10, but if they did, the "runner up" would probably get the invite)

me thinks you missed the point of the question ... The Rose must take a non BCS team should one of the two league champions be unavailable (in the NC), per the new contract ... but can the Rose take that non BCS team in place of a league champion unavailable because they are on probation?

I think we need the actual BCS wording to figure this out.

The Rose Bowl gets the Pac-10 champ vs The Big Ten champ. If USC wins the Pac-10 the runner-up wouldn't get the invite to the Rose Bowl I wouldn't think. Just because USC is on probation doesn't make the runner-up the Champion. IMO

USC will not be in the BCS standings.

On July 30, 2010, the BCS announced that teams which are ineligible for postseason play will be removed from computer ratings for the purposes of determining the BCS Standings.

The Pac-10 Champion is a Automatic qualifier:

2. The champions of the Atlantic Coast, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-10, and Southeastern conferences will have automatic berths in one of the participating bowls through the 2013 regular season

USC cannot win the Pac 10, so the "2nd place" team will go to the Rose

Does that mean we root for USC this year as a backup plan?

I don't think it'll work that way. If OSU makes the NCG, the Rose gets first pick (or one of the first two), and has to take a non-AQ if they meet the requirements. The 2nd Pac-10 team (should USC win it) has to be considered the Pac-10 champ for the bowls, or they wouldn't have a representative in the BCS (and they are an AQ conference, so they have to have one).

If OSU were to give us our only loss and run the table, our only hope to go to the Rose Bowl would be to hope Boise State makes it to the NCG, thus giving the non-AQ a BCS spot, and opening a spot in Pasadena for us (I think that would fall within the rules, would need to see the exact wording to be sure).

TCU and Boise St could also both lose a game a not qualify for the BCS.

The odds of that are a little slim, IMO. Unless Boise or TCU were to get completely rolled by someone (VT/Oregon State), then sure. But if Boise were to play competitively in a loss to one of those teams, and win all their other games, I don't see them finishing outside the top 14.

I really hope we don't have to worry about that and VaTech shuts Boise State up.
