Give it up for Woody

I thought he was outstanding last night Vs Marquette. He single handedly took Fisher out of the game, he made him look pretty bad really. He does so much defensively for the team, and is a good leader. I'm sure I will get frustrate when he has a poor offensive game later in the season, but I think we all need to STOP overlooking all he does for this team!

He was great last night, and seems to play his best basketball when he's matched up against bigger and better competition. He's never going to be that dynamic or the offense isn't going to run through him, but he's solid and a HUGE part of Iowa's success the past few seasons just because of all the intangibles he brings.

I was just glad to see he did not pick up any stupid fouls hedging a screen thirty feet from the basket.

I'll credit him for a good game. Now I want to see it consistently. Once that happens I'll be impressed.

Was it me, or does it appear Woody is a little quicker? Maybe I was tweakin a little last night, who knows....

I thought he did well for what he’s asked to do especially. He still doesn’t have any aggressive moves around the hoop I wish he’d have.Whether that’s lack of confidence in his ability or who knows what is besidesthe point. But no player is perfect and I agree. Everything that he’s bringingto the table is more than worth his scholly. He’s a huge part of this team.

Totally agree. Adam is a seasoned veteran, now, and a good ballplayer. Not great, but darned good.

Am I not seeing right, or does it seem like when he shoots, the ball is almost at the waist/chest level rather than above his head?

It’s an awkward looking shot for sure… Hecertainly starts it about shoulder high and doesn’t extend up over his headwith it so much as he does away from his body. Making it easier to defend/heneeds to be wide open to do it. I just wish he’d have a quick powerful dropstep where he turns into the defender to go up. He’d get easier looks and drawmore fouls if he could do that a couple times a game at least. But this is ateam of shooters more than anything. MG being the only one that’s able to beatanyone off the dribble much kinda worries me but I think we’ll be a good teamagain I loved what I saw last night overall that’s for sure. Hard to pick thatapart much. I loved how after the 8-0 run Marquette got off to to start the 2[SUP]nd[/SUP]half after Fran called a TO we went on a 9-1 run and that was the end of thathaha.

Dom Uhl brings his shot up from the chest as well.

He is moving his feet better on the defensive side of the ball. Often when a player is caught for reaching in it is because they are out of position and find themselves reaching in to get the ball.

I would like like to see him take a little more time to turn toward the basket and put a little more touch on the ball. Often times he seems to be rushing the shot and appears to be just tossing it quickly up with out much touch or spin on the ball.

Can't remember where I heard it but somebody said they talked to Woody and he said in previous years he went out very physical and aggressive on D knowing Gabe was there in a time of need but understood this year he would have to adjust his play. On a side note, one of the foul calls on him last night was bogus... Couldn't have been more vertical and I thought he has established legal guarding position prior to the contact.

Woody was good but last night but a lot of credit goes to Mikey. Dude set Woody quite a few times and in general made about every right decision.

Mike did a great job passing and distributing the ball. He also surprised some of the guys guarding him when he exploded and took it to the rim and finished well. That's a great improvement for him as one of the criticism when he was younger was getting rejected at the rim to often. He has mastered the art of body position when going to the rim in such a way that to stop him the opponent is going to have to foul him. Keep up the great job Mike and use your leadership skills to help pass on and prepare the under classmen on the team.

Woodbbury and Uhtoff both deserve kudos for the defense they played against Ellenson, a potential top 10 NBA pick next year.

Woody has been denying the entry pass to his guy and playing great position defense pretty much his whole career. The Marquette game I think he took it up a notch which is awesome to see. If he can continue to pass well and make his open bunnies this team will be a tough out for everyone.

I may be in the minority but I also really like the idea of going 4 out 1 in every once in awhile. We have the shooters at the 4 with Uthoff, Uhl, and Jones to stretch the floor which would allow Woody to get the ball with room to work with without having to worry about another defender stripping it from him right away. If another defender collapses to the ball he has the passing ability to find the open guy whether he is spotting up or cutting to the basket. This would also open the lane up and allow for the guys on the perimeter to beat their man off the dribble and have 3 outlet options on the outside and Woody down low to go to depending on where if any help defense comes.

I'm not saying make it the primary offense but I think it would be a great chance to give opposing defenses something else to look at and have to prepare for. Perhaps try it during a scoring drought to catch the defense off guard or something. Heck even let Uthoff be the guy down low. He's a mismatch nightmare in the post if teams are playing man and have a smaller defender on him.

I'm hoping he shuts down Jameel McFeelshimself when we play ISU. In fact I hope ISU comes up about 20 games short of the NCAA's this year so they have to talk about going to a bowl game next season.
