University of Houston officials met with Billy Gillispie on Friday and were scheduled to meet with former Iowa State and Southern California coach Tim Floyd later in the day, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

The source termed the meetings exploratory in order to gauge mutual interest and that subsequent contact could be initiated depending on the assessment of those talks.

Gillispie has strong support among a segment of Houston fans. Athletic director Mack Rhoades said the university hopes to hire a coach with a salary in the range of $500,000 annually and that the new coach must accept the desire for improvements to antiquated Hofheinz Pavilion on "a leap of faith," which is not strong testimony in an area of dire need. The university is initiating a feasibility study on updating Hofheinz and making more improvements to Robertson Stadium, the Cougars' on-campus football facility.

Bob Marlin also met late Thursday night with UH officials, but Friday morning accepted the job at Louisiana-Lafayette. Floyd has also reportedly expressed interest in the vacant job at UTEP.

Gillispie just needs an opportunity. I am confident that any program he takes over will be successful. The guy can flat out recruit AND coach.

I'm more impressed with Houston's canidates than ours, at least so far from the names I've heard.

I agree. They are free to go after the guys who know how to get players.
Iowa is probably stuck in the ''we are frightened by recruiter/coaches'' syndrome and will settle for a ''safe'' lick type hire from a mid-major.
Iowa bb....we don't make waves...we take naps in CHA..and we like it!
