Gesell

I am the only one who feels that Mike Gesell's resurgence is a key for this year? He's averaging less than half what he did last year so far. Especially if JO is not retuning this year, we need to start getting production out of MG. Jok will have some big games but it is evident he will be inconsistent. Clemmons is an improved shooter but that's not his forte. Marble is streaky from the outside. Gesell needs to find his mojo if this team is to do well in Atlantis and the rest of the year. The number one thing I'm looking for in the Penn game is Gesell production. Thoughts?

Gesell will be fine, it takes some time to get back to form after an injury. I'm really not worried.

Who said JO isnt coming back this year?

I was about to ask the same thing. I thought the story was he's out six weeks, not six months. But Uncle did say retuning, not returning, so maybe he's talking about something different.

You are speaking from a strictly PPG standpoint? With this many players available, many people will be scoring less than they did last year.
Fortunately, we aren't playing horse.

The scuttlebutt is that he's now being considered for a redshirt depending on how well he recovers for the B1G season.

The RS makes sense if he's not 100%. Things like this happen which is one of the reasons the 11 man rotation never worried me.

I'm not worried about Gesell. Again, the luxury of a deep rotation allows guys the opportunity to recover from injuries, work through slumps, etc. Also, Gesell isn't going out of his way to find shots. When we need his offense he will start looking for his offense IMO.

His production is going to be up and down because we don't have a PG. He and Marble are going to be switching off and on at point so they will each have their off times when they can't get any rhythm going.

Not completely true.

A RS for JO puts him in the Gesell/Woody/Uthoff/Clemmons class meaning Iowa will have 5 rides to fill when they are done playing.

Not ideal for class balance.

I agree it's not ideal for class balance. It does make sense if Fran believes JO can help him win games the next 2 years. Why throw away a year of eligibility just to balance classes? Also, one of those other guys could get hurt and miss a year. Now we're back in balance.

I know some...okay many...don't like JO. I'm fine with JO and even more fine with Fran deciding what route he wants to take. It's all good. I can live with whatever Fran wants to do either way.

I, too, think Gesell will be just fine. I don't agree that he is out of position as a point guard. In fact, I like Iowa better when he is playing that position and Marble is at the 2. With Clemmons continuing to mature and make better decisions, I feel really good about those two handling the point. I noticed that Fran commented after the last game that he wanted Marble at the 2 in order to take advantage of his ability to attack on offense in a variety of ways.

Little late for that, dont you think?

Not for next season. Jok gets this year as the designated shooter, JO gets next season as the designated shooter while Jok RS's. Whoever comes out on top starts the next season and the other guy transfers. Hunger Games rules.

I agree he needs to have a big year. The back court looks a lot thinner with JO out. He needs to play smart ( which he does ) and shoot the three very well. Play 25 -30 min a game

I actually meant that he is out of position in the 2 spot.

I had kind of forgotten that Fran switched him back to point I think last game. I used to think that the team was better with Marble at the point becuase Marble's game is better when he has the ball in his hands but I'm starting to change my tune becuase I think playing the 2 has hurt Mike more than helped Dev so it makes sense that Fran made the switch back.

Personally, I think MG struggles a bit to find his rhythm in the half court but finds it easily in transition. He looks a bit "choppy" running the half court but smooth as silk in transition. I also think MG is the best we have at running the fast break.

And yet he was the second leading three point shooter for the Hawks last year at 36.2%. (Eric May was the leader.)
