Gesell shows his ups and the way he needs to finish at the rim

A lot of people have been giving MG crap since last years collapse and even this year about him driving and getting shots swatted away.

Some posters dont know his jumping ability. I mentioned last week that he needs to somehow get one longer last stride or more under control so he can explode up and lay that ball off right at the rim.

Well he did it last nite, he dunked that one breakaway.

If he can hit the 3 ptr and mid range jumper then he will have more chances to drive. I hope one of the coaches got in his ear about finishing high at the rim, it could mean a big difference for him.

I hope also that the hawk wing players move a little better to make themselves available for passes if MG, Sapp, or Trey are driving the lane. I think the wings stand around alot

I was very happy for Mike. He had a great game and the was a definitive slam dunk.

Also that slam in the first half by Gabe was awesome. On the dead run and the ball was passed perfectly to him. That was NBA style.

Mike was playing like he was on fire (as evidenced by his shooting last night)....I hope that's every game from now on and that it becomes contagious to the rest of the team

I didn't really see any difference in "finishing at the rim" other than he made much better decisions about when to go all the way to the basket and when to pull up or pass. Obviously when he is out ahead of everyone he has a chance to dunk. Which he did. And he had the awesome 3-point play at the end.

But he also made numerous other plays in the lane that involved options other than going all the way to the basket. The hoop to tie it with about 5 minutes left where he was in transition, pulled up about 6-8 feet away, reverse pivoted and hit the sweet bank shot. Or other times when he got into the lane and either passed or came to a jump stop, and found a passer. His athletic ability has never really been an issue. But he's added many other options other than just going all the way to the basket, which often for a guard his size is not going to be the best option.

In the second half, Gesell and Clemmons did a very good job of penetrating and then kicking the ball out. But no one could make an outside shot in the second half.

I very well could. Good and bad shooting can both be contagious for you and your teammates both.

His problem has been he commits to go up for the shot to far away from the hoop and picks up the ball. Its too telegraphed and easy to block.

He needs keep that dribble all the way to the bucket and then make a decision to go up quickly, pass or dribble back out based upon what the help defender is doing.

Exactly it's almost robotic and "telegraphed" is a good word for describing how he looks at times. He had a great game out there. Gotta give him props. If he can play that well just keeping pressure on the D this team can do some big things. White and Uthoff aren't going to have off games like that together very often. If either of them had played well Iowa wins by double figures against UNC. MG doesn't have to be a 14-16 pt a game guy either. But his days of going 0 for the game just can't happen. I think he can be around 10 pts a game and have some blow up games when he gets the right matchups and gets hot.

show of hands, who knew he could dunk before this game? *crickets*

yup, nobody. I doubt he ever dunked in warmups or in practice. When you're on fire, you are on fire.

Seen him dunk one in the No. Dakota State game. Trey D. threw one down too. He has a 32" vert. one of the best on the team. It's not that big of a secret.

still not a fan of Mike trying to finish at the rim. That 3 pt play at end of NC was beautiful, but let's be honest, that tear-drop kiss off the glass isn't going to fall more than 25% of the time IMO and he doesn't get fouled doing it. I did like when he drove, spun, paused for D to fly past and banked in the 6 footer.

Mike definitely played with more determination and confidence, esp after hitting those first couple shots. He absolutely need this going forward.

Best vertical on the team at 34 in is what I have been told. He also was a high jumper in hs that went over 6 ft. People need to start giving him credit for what he does and how good he is rather than wishing he was someone else. He may not be a nba caliber pg...but he just out played an nba caliber pg. and anyone who says he is a 2 guard needs to be laughed out of the room. He initiates the offense...that is a pg's job. He is the guy the ball goes to when the offensive set didn't work to get them in something new...that is a pg's job. Clemmons is a better 2 guard than pg and I am liking the new make up of the rotation. We have 3 guys who should play 30 min...white, Uthoff, gesell. Woody should be around 25 min. And clemmons around 20 to 25. Then use the bench to spell them and use the hot hands. 7 or 8 man rotation. Olaseni, jok, and oglesby get the 6,7,8 spots and uhl and Dickerson get smaller roles not really in the rotation but if fouls or injuries or fatigue force us they can play.

You're pg needs to be able to get to the rim.
He needs to develop more creative shots is the thing, incorporate some floaters and runners ect.

Stop trying to get all the way to the backboard in a straight line.

Gesell is very quick. If he could learn the "drive and pop" (in other words, drive past his man and then pass it off or take the 5 to 8 foot jumpshot), he would be unstoppable. He actually did it on one play against North Carolina: He drove down the right side of the lane, and instead of taking it to the basket, he stopped, pivoted, and took a 7 or 8 foot jumpshot that he banked in. Beautiful move that I have not seem him do before.

There is so much potential with this current Iowa team. Can Fran put it together? It starts Friday against the Clowns, a very good team coming into Carver.

Give Ogle's some credit in Gabe's slam. He laid that pass in there better than Rudock on his best day.
