Gesell really stepped up today

5-10, 1 rebound, 6 assists, 11 points. He was getting to the rim aggressively, only once did I feel he should have passed out of a layup and that was after his steal and fast break. But excellent game for Mike.

I thought he made a couple of bad decisions in the 1st half on the offensive end but that's not a big deal. He was great on offense in the 2nd half especially and his defense was outstanding all day. He's turning into a very good defender...by moving his feet not mugging like Craft and others.

Yep, only 1 turnover, moved the ball well in offensive end of course, some very nice assists.

I have liked him from day one and he just makes smart plays.

Gesell was awesome today. And to think just a few weeks ago I was more -meh- than -awe-. Not down on him, just thought that others should step it up more. Bad me. MG has been oMG lately.

I've been hugely impressed with Gessell lately. Seems like he found that extra gear -- or maybe I just started noticing.

What's that old refrain about guard play in the tournament?

I'm glad we'll get to watch him for another couple years.

And by his senior year other teams in the Big 10 will be saying "He's still there? It seems like he's been at Iowa for 6 years."

No doubt. Good to see him healthy … he's much more explosive on the drive this year and handling the ball as well as any point guard in the Big Ten.

Northwestern aint tough.

NW isn't as talented, would be the better description. Their defense is "tough" by design which helped in their mini win-streak until today. Knocking down NW's slowdown on their own washed-out purple court is a good thing to see either way.

Remember when he got blocked and missed a couple layups against Wisconsin and people actually suggested he stop attacking the basket....that was beyond stupid.

I think most people said he needed to pick his spots better, which he's definitely done lately. He isn't forcing shots.

gesell takes care of the ball and has been better at finding people the last few games, but he's still getting through the learning curve. he's tentative and doesn't make good decisions on the break, and isn't getting the team into the half court offense fluidly.

his a/to rate is spectacular and his d is a lot better than people give him credit for.

how he plays over the second half of the B1G is crucial for his development -- he needs to be the guy who makes the team click next year.

I think he'll be playing better in March than he is now. And he is playing very well now. Anthony Clemmons will also be playing better in March, much better.

That's why Iowa will make a deep run in The Dance.
