Gatens

He's not at the level he needs to be right now. He was supposed to be the senior leader. Every big game he is a non factor.

Oglesby > Gatens.

May is playing better. Marble is very impressive. I can't even tell who the starting five should be anymore.

Gatens is getting a lot of attention from the opposing defenses and he is getting frustrated. He has to learn to play through that, drive to the basket, and find a way to get to the line. Either that or he needs to find the open team mate and make them pay.

But I am very excited about Oglesby, I do not see much drop off when he is in there.

Fran screwed up when he took over the team. He needed to clean house and do whatever was necessary to bring in a strong class immediately. There just are not any true D1 starters on the team.

There is a lack of speed, shooting ability, ball handling, athleticism...

Waiting for guys to graduate was just not the way to go. Would have been better to clean house and bring in some JUCOs who could run.

Yeah, that was going to happen, at least when it came to Matt. From what I've heard, Matt and his Dad helped hasten Lick's departure (which I fully supported), and Mike may have had some input on the coach who once stayed in his house.

If this is true, than this is the only positive impact that Gatens has ever had on this basketball program. Face it people, he's not that good. This is probably the only program in the B1G that he even remotely has a chance to start.

Nice. We know he isn't very good. It isn't his fault Iowa offered him a scholarship and couldn't get anyone better. He is a Hawk and he is trying out there. What do you want him to do? Miraculously be a better basketball player? Get over it. It is our staff and AD's fault they couldn't find a coach(es) that could recruit better talent. He is doing what he can out there.

I think people don't understand how hard it is to look good when you are literally the only "shooter" on the team. Matt is a good player, but let's be honest, as a opposing team, its not hard to guard one guy...

This.

Gatens is limited in terms of what he do on his own to create his own shots, but he is a player who is VERY dangerous when the rest of his team can take pressure off of him. He has had to deal with being THE GUY TO STOP since day one of his career. Not hard to scout and defend one guy like that. And yet he's a career 14-15 point scorer. He's a Hawk who stuck it out through a coaching change and when most of the talent around him bailed.

Agree 100%. Speraw and Dillard should have been in FL and TX respectively searching for a couple of court ready guys. Some will say "there wasn't anyone available". Really, you know this for a fact? Hell, a 2 star juco kid would be a vast improvement over guys we play. The large girl who doesn't get asked to prom doesn't help herself out by eating Big Macs and we are that girl. Fortunately the LOI's were signed before the season, or no doubt a couple of recruits would be having second thoughts.

Gatens doesn't get double-teamed on a regular basis. He's just not quick enough to get himself open and he still has no clue how to use a screen.

The kid is a hawkeye and I appreciate his effort that he gives but I agree with the majority here, he wouldn't start for any other Big10 team.
