JJ Redick was not a scorer in the sense of what 99% of analysts think of as a scorer. Redick just had the best shot of anyone in college basketball and didn't miss. He was a great shooter. Gatens is not even a good scorer he is a good shooter, not great. Gatens, IMO, is in no sense of the the word a scorer. Scorers can shoot, take you off the dribble, and get to the FT line. Gatens can do one of those things and he is only average at that.
I guess my definition of a scorer is you shoot and score points and if you shoot 3's really good and consistently score points, you are a scorer. I agree that he is not the typical scorer in the sense that he finds ways to get to the FT line, but that doesn't eliminate him from being considered a scorer. The only thing Matt doesn't do well is take it strong to the rim and get himself on the line. He needs to incorprate the mid-range game much more and as I said he would score 20 ppg instead of trying to force a drive. Forcing his mid-range game, which he is very good at will result in getting fouls by simply using the shot fake. There are numerous players that are considered shooter, but they have averaged over 20 ppg, so is that not a scorer, I am confused, there are many categories of scorers IMO. If a player can utilize his game with his best attributes and scores, he is a scorer especially if he is doing it night in and night out with an occasional off game. This is what Matt has done the last 8 games, he had his occasional bad game at the worst time, if he has a good night, who knows what happens. I wish Gatens being a "scorer" was the only thing Iowa had to worry about.
