Gatens was the reason we got killed

He was. I'm a big defender of Gatens, because I've seen how well he can shoot the 3. Also, we went to the same highschool so I feel loyalty to they guy. The reality is he has only had a good shot a couple games this year. Not sure the stats, but this has to be his worst year from 3. When he missed a couple wide open 3's, I knew we were fudged. 2 consecutive air balls at one point...unreal. 2-11 C'Mon Gatens. That is soo weak.

Gatens did not have a stellar game by any stretch of the imagination, but he was hardly "the" reason. There were many, many reasons.

He had a poor shooting performance.

Mel couldn't defend without fouling.

Defensive rotation was terrible, giving Minny's posts easy dunks underneath.

May was timid and shot poorly.

Marble can't shoot.

McCabe didn't give Iowa anything.

That walk on guy was too afraid to shoot when he had open looks.

Gatens had 4 or 5 shots that went about halfway down before popping up. McCaffery even mentioned that he wasn't upset about the shooting, didn't like the dependence on the three ball, but wasn't angry about the misses, said that it happens sometimes.

Good grief. It's called basketball. When you get beat that badly, one person can contribute to the loss, but they are hardly the sole factor.

This isn't wrestling or a sport where its man against man. there are a lot of factors. Not one Iowa player shot well...and if one person on the team is going to hoist more three's than any other, it damn better well be Matt Gatens.

he had a bad game. This is hardly a complete team. He is the only shooter opponents have to worry about...has been for most of his career...which means people can overplay him. Not an easy career by any stretch.

The guy is a loyal Hawkeye. Cut the kid some slack

There were several reasons we lost in the end, I agree. Gatens horrific shooting was the catalyst. We were beating them... Gatens went south, and the team followed. Them playing zone, forcing us to shoot. Gatens missed a couple buckets(they were in and out, which blows), and it was all over. Your vet has to make those wide open shots. If he would have made those, the outcome would have been a lot different. The players would have continued to play at a high level like they did for the first 5 min. They wouldn't have been able to sit back in the zone, and things would have opened up in the paint.

im normally a big defender of gatens but the OP is on track here.

we knew going in that we would have big issues inside, and our offense got him a ton of open looks and he shot horribly. i was at the game and dont even recall Matt having a contested shot.

Iowa was leading with 6 mins. left in the first half by four and Matt was already 2-6 with 2 air balls(which I've never seen before) so I think we were realying on other people and that gave out as well as Matt continuing to struggle and Mel sitting with foul problems. No inside threat leaves only the outside shots to live and die on.

Miller,

I'm not saying he is the reason we lost the game. I'm saying he is the reason we got killed. I'm not trying to bash the guy. Like you said people have bad games. I bet he puts this loss on him, all deserving or not.

I'm a huge Gatens fan. I expect a big game out of him at NW.

This is not his worse year shooting the 3. He's shooting a higher percentage this year than last year despite playing his first 7 games of the season one handed.

Since the Iowa State game he's shot nearly 40% from behind the arc.

Everything else you said is also a fail.

I guess I grow tired of playing the blame game all the time in this society. Gotta have someone to stick something on.

Iowa is not a good team. Last I checked, they are tied for last in the league.

To sit here and try to cut up blame and be hypercritical of a program that doesn't have half the pieces it needs is...well, a lot of things.

Give the kid a break!!! Last year he had to bulk up, this year he had to trim down. Cant be easy to keep your shot with all the up and down he has had to go through.

Like I said in another thread, if Gatens is your 4th or 5th option offensively, you're going to be in good shape. The fact that he's our first option reflects more on the lack of talent the coaching staffs (mainly Lick) failed to bring in. Gatens is a legit B10 player, he would get minutes on any team in the B10, which can not be said for most of the guys on this team, he's just not an elite B10 talent.

We have the tiebreaker, I'd say we're 10th.

It's not about pointing putting blame on him. It's an observation as to why we got killed. I'm not sayin he sucks(I think he's good). I'm not saying bench him. I'm not getting on his facebook page and ripping him for having a horrible game(like others might). I was in not way being mean spirited with the thread. I did title the thread the way I did for a reason. I mean look I got John f'ing Miller to post on it.... Perhaps it would have been more politically correct if I said our 3 point shooting from our best 3 point shooter was WAY off, and that's why we lost so bad.

The thread title would suggest otherwise. Iowa lost by 17, and was down by 20+ at times in the 2nd half. Nobody played well. Not Gatens, not May, not Basabe, etc...

What exactly are you trying to say then? Either you don't really believe what you wrote, or you're backtracking like crazy.

I can't single out any one Hawks player who did well against Minnie.

It was a team failure, team loss.

Better days are coming!
