Gatens Injures Hand in Practice

Re: You have got to be kidding me...

this program is so snakebit it's unbelievable. With surgery to a tendon, I would assume the recovery is quite a while, and how long till he's anywhere near back to full speed? Are we looking at the Big 10 season for his return?

It's on his non-shooting hand which should help a little bit but it could be a while.

A quick google search says most folks who have this surgery need to have their hand in a splint for 4-6 weeks, and then therapy/rehab after that. Sometimes great sports medicine guys can speed these types of things up, but it sounds like you've got to spend a lot of time just waiting for the tendon to regrow.

I mean, good God. I don't even want to speculate as to what else could happen to this team. We are getting into the curse of Mr. Davis territory here.

Not good at all but the silver lining is that a young guy is going to get more PT-maybe two younger guys. Good for the future, not so good for the near future.

True enough. Good opportunity here for someone else in the lineup to get more PT and experience. Hopefully it will help us in the long run, but I was so looking forward to the start of the season with our full roster. Hopefully Gatens can at least make it back sometime in December?

If his recovery ends up taking a while, I wouldn't mind seeing him redshirt so we can have him an extra year.

Just like Tony Freeman, he will not be near full strength til the Big Ten season..but unlike Tony, he should not rush back, and waste a season.

Sorry, but this was a near throwaway season as it was, but now, without the top scorer for the non-conference season when they actually could win some games....it is a total throwaway season.

Redshirt,Matt, and help the team make the NCAA tourny in 2013.
Not like he is destined for the NBA anyway, and if he stays,he might refine his game enough to play in Europe.

This blows chunks,as they say.

I dont know anything about medicine, but I just cant see him being back in December. Maybe I'm wrong but i think this will be 8+weeks of him being out. And it is a great opportunity for the younger guys to get in there and show people what they have/need improvement on.

I wouldnt mind it either.

Sometimes young guys should sit and learn. I really wonder if it will that great for the development of Marble(who is too thin) and McCabe(not ready) to be forced into big minutes.

Sure, they will get experience but the humiliation could stunt their growth.

just wanted to make some corrections.

1) Death
2) Taxes (you can avoid paying these)

redshirt him

what's the difference if we win 8 games or 12 games?

Probably not a whole lot, but imagine recruiting after you've just gone 8-24 or something. You think things are bad now.. A single-digit win season couldn't help.

Fran needs all of the good fortune he can get, and this obviously doesn't qualify. Probably the best player on the team going down with a major injury before they even play the first game.

I almost posted this yesterday. Gatens had his hand wrapped on the bus yesterday, but I didn't know it was serious.

ISU has a hurt player who broke his hand and it doesn't require surgery and he's out 4-6 weeks. Unless Gatens has a miracle worker for a doctor I doubt we see him until Big 10 play at the earliest. You hate to see this happen to guys like him who really put in the work in the offseason and don't get the reward of playing during the year.

I see lots of talk here saying he's done for the year. Has there been any official comment on his timeframe and or the lenght of his recovery?
