Considering only the state of the Iowa football and basketball programs (eg signing ferentz to 2020, signing lickliter then mccaffery), do you approve or disapprove of his performance as AD?

Time will tell. Fran hasn't been given a chance yet with his recruits. Ferentz is still butthurt about all the great players that produced a 7-5 record last year and graduated to the NFL. I'd say UI athletics is on the up and up.

Disapprove. I can handle ferentz' contract. I can forgive the horrible basketball hirings. But the straw that KO'd the camel is not painting the water tower. Lol

He gets a B- in my book.

He gets an A+ for being a great administrator and a great fundraiser.

He gets an F for the handling of the rhabdo crisis last summer. He needed to be out there dealing with it and he failed in epic fashion. He simply didn't get it.

He gets an B+ on coaching decisions. Everyone hated Alford and he simply told him to win. Alford couldn't do it and then had to go convince everyone that New Mexico was a step up from Iowa. He went out an hired the consensus coach of the year. it didn't work. He made a quick decision, quickly admitting defeat and went out and got a guy that the fanbase is excited about that has a history of turning around programs.

With Kirk - he has made a determination that having Kirk locked up is a better bet, than having an easy exit with him. I don't necessarily agree with that logic in general, but it isn't an unreasonable position for him to take given KF's body of work.

This is actually a very fair assessment. I agree with you, although the mccaffery hire is starting to look very questionable.

Oh Good God! When Woodbury doesn't average 40 points and 20 boards a game and we aren't 30-2 next year we'll all be driving off a cliff. The program is garbage! Give him time to turn things around.

Excellent post. I largely concur.

LOL. Fran's fine and will get the program moving in the right direction with his players. Meanwhile, get off his back.

I think it is just a wee bit early to be saying that.

This cupboard hasn't seen food for a long time.

Lol? I agree that it's way to early to tell on mccaffery, but Iowa is essentially the same team as last year. Can you honestly say you've seen much improvement this year? That's a fair expectation.

I'm willing to give Fran time to continue bringing in better recruits and to see what the team looks like in two years. How about you?

I'm really waiting for only one man's post in this thread: BaryGarta.

All other opinions on the topic of this thread shall be subordinate to his.

Money. That is what the AD is about. Barta does a decent job getting it.

Basketball was a mess-up. He should have either hired a name to replace Alford, or let the hire have more time. Now that he has gone the same hiring route, he needs to wait it out. Probably be a full five years of the contract until we know how it will go.

mccaffery has the "fire" so many want to see from kirk, but now you want to fire him too? this is ridiculous

Kind of a silly premise, isn't it?

Wrestling is back to the former dominance, the men's track team won their first Big Ten title in decades, women's basketball is consistently strong, men's golf finishes in the top 15 at NCAAs. Even better, I don't know that we have any truly amateurish programs any more-- I know the volleyball team used to be legendarily bad and now is at least competent. Then look at the record in terms of academics-- our football team graduates at an 83% clip, whereas the student body as a whole comes in at 70%. Combine all of that with the development and growth of facilities and you have a pretty strong AD.

Really, the only real garbage program is men's basketball, and Barta has tried about everything he can to turn it around-- better facilities, first of all, but also giving Lickliter the quick hook (which was basically an admission of defeat). Let's give it some room to breathe. Or are there fans out there who still want Bruce Pearl?

Yeah, the Lick thing was a killer for a program. It will take Fran until this incoming class are Sophomores or perhaps Juniors before we see the type of success we all want.

Only way that changes is if Fran gets an immediate impact type guy. But those guys are hard to come by.

I don't think so, in fact I'd go so far as to remove Basketball from the question. The most important role of the AD in todays world, like it or not, isn't the academic aspect and survivability of sports as a whole. It's all about revenue and specifically the football program which is paramount to that success.

Then you would give Barta an A+?
