Future Hawkeye Brooks caps prep career with a title | Des Moines Register Staff Blogs
From article:
The two-time Illinois state champion said he made his decision to move up a weight for freestyle after a conversation Tuesday night with his Oak Park River Forest High School coach Mike Powell.
Brooks said he was weighing close to 200 pounds when Powell asked him if he could win the title at 195. Brooks said he could.
“Those guys (at 195) are bigger and stronger, but I was surprised how strong I felt against them,†he said. “I thought I was going to have to out-style, out-technique those guys, but some of them I could just push around.â€
Brooks said he thinks he’ll start his career with the Hawkeyes at 184 pounds. He picked Iowa last fall over Minnesota, Illinois, Oklahoma and Missouri and said the Hawkeyes’ style of wrestling suits him well.
“That’s how I wrestle,†he said. “I’ve been trained to brawl and push the pace the whole time and I think I fit perfectly there.â€
