Analysis of the Deerfield vs. Mundelein game this weekend.

great game, great crowd. gym was about 75% full which is pretty good for a saturday night.

game was pretty close throughout even see-sawing back and forth in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. but the bottom line is that duje dukan put the big hurt on mundelein. the only times that mundelein had a little run or took the lead was when dukan was out of the game with foul trouble.

dukan finished with 33 pts and 15 boards. hit 3 threes out of the six he took from beyond the arc, but the big three pointer he hit was at the 2 minute mark when the game was tied. it totally shifted the momentum in deerfield's favor, and they never looked back.

deerfield is a team that executes very well. a lot of their guys are capable of beating their defenders off the dribble on single man coverage using ball fakes. because they have dukan in the middle pulling down rebounds, they often have a guard run out early for the outlet pass and easy bucket. additionally, they are really tough in the 2-3 zone. they have a lot of guys that are long and lanky and can get hands out in passing lanes. #5 ryan davis and #14 adam rhum seem to be real active on defense for deerfield. really the only time deerfield was threatened was when dukan had 2 fouls in the first quarter and had to sit out and then picked up his third foul in the third and had to sit some more. #20 oren schwartz is the other guy who will usually put up numbers for deerfield by slashing through the lane. the team is really good at pushing the ball in transition but even in the half court set, they move the ball quickly and despite their frenetic style of play, aren't forcing a lot of bad shots but looking for the open man. sixth man, max burgess, had a quiet night for deerfield with only 1 basket.

while mundelein didn't have an answer for dukan. brust was just flat out nasty. the kid is so quick, is always moving, using screens, and gets his shot off so fast, it's almost impossible to defend. he finished with 24 points, surprisingly only had 3 threes on 50% shooting from beyond the arc, but had an absolutely ridiculous double pump three pointer heave between 2 defenders as the halftime buzzer sounded that swished in and gave mundelein the momentum going into the second half.

i think mundelein likes to run the pick 'n roll with brust and sawvell, and it seems to work well for them because either sawvell goes in for the basket or brust dribbles to the side and hits a three. it was a little harder for them to pull it off with dukan waiting down there in the paint for the swat. sawvell finished with 19 and the freshman, knar, had 16. like i said in the other thread, knowing that knar is a freshman makes you really impressed at his court awareness. i'm remembering now that one of his threes was slightly in front of that first line after halfcourt that swished in. between brust and knar, those two guys are worth watching.

Love it! It'll be great to have a quick potent guard on this team!

See that Dukan is Wisky-bound, part of what looks like a pretty tall class of recruits.

Dukan's dad played pro ball in europe and is currently a scout for the Chicago Bulls. He was the guy who was primarily responsible for bringing Toni Kukoc to the Bulls back in the 90's. His kid will be a nice typical Wisky big man...can shoot well from distance, and strong frame for the paint.
