Fran's Best Move of the ISU Game

Havent been around the boards much since Friday night so I apologize if this has been discussed already.

Hawks were up 7 midway through the 2nd half and fouled ISU and their player made the basket heading a TV timeout. So Hawks are up 5 and ISU has a free throw after the break. ISU player missed the FT and Fran had drawn up a play during the timeout and got White a backdoor alley oop that quickly turned the momentum back to Iowa.

ISU had a chance to cut the lead to 4 and within 20 seconds Iowa had the lead back to 7 with Carver rocking after White's dunk.

Great use of the timeout by Fran. Guy knows how to coach.

I believe the lob for the dunk...

was in the first half immediately after a timeout. But your main point is valid, Fran's use of inbounds plays and plays after timeouts has been consistently good. Iowa doesn't always score, but they do consistently get a good shot, which is all you can ask. In Friday's game, I can think of several examples. Iowa was down 3 at the end of the first half with 2.6 seconds left. Ran the nice inbounds play to White for a lay-in to cut the margin to 1. Then in second half Gesell's first hoop of the game came off an inbounds play (variation of the earlier play to White), where Gesell got an open 18-footer.

Yeah. This is something I've like about Fran from the time he got here. I saw his 2010-11 team play in person several times when I still lived in the Promised Land, and although they were outgunned, they always stemmed the tide or made a mini-run out of timeouts. The man is a very good strategist (in addition to being a good recruiter).

Agree. He is a terrific coach. I thought he thoroughly out-coached "the Mayor" in the game Friday night.

On his radio show tonight, he spent a lot of time talking about how well this team meshes as a group, and how the juniors and seniors are not jealous of the playing time being given to the younger players. I think it starts with the coach, communicating expectations and roles to the players and keeping his promises. This guy just communicates so well.... high expectations but lots of positive feedback when things go right.

I know there is a danger in overreacting to just one game, but it sure was a sweet win Friday night. It finally shut those Cyclone fans up and got them off of this board for awhile!

It is on at 7 p.m. most Mondays on 1040 WHO. Probably other Hawkeye Network stations as well.

His show is really interesting - he goes into a lot of detail and never backs down to callers.

Tonight was a classic - the doosh Tommy calls in and tries to impress everyone with his BB knowledge by stating that Iowa should be doing the "high-low" series with Woodbury (implying that they are not).

Now, please understand, my BB knowledge is pretty limited, but I found Fran's answer very interesting: He told Tommy, without a hint of sarcasm, that they were running a "lot" of high-low with Woodbury and that Tommy had missed the boat on that one.

If this guy can get a sufficient amount of talent to come to Iowa City, you might see some pretty fun stuff. I think we are just scratching the surface this year with a very young team.

How did Fran say it? Was it snarky/elitist or calm/cool?

I thought his use of White to create matchup problems was a great move. White was able to penetrate, get to the line and insert himsef into the game early and often. My biggest concern was a cold start and White remedied that with his hot start. Second choice would be use of the bench. Guys never got fatigued or picked up tired legs fouls and we had maximum effort down the stretch.
