Oddly enough, Thursday is Fran McCaffery Bobblehead night

The Big Ten Conference office today announced a one-game suspension and public reprimand of University of Iowa men’s basketball head coach Fran McCaffery for violating the Big Ten Sportsmanship Policy during the second half of Iowa’s game at Wisconsin on Jan. 5. In addition, the conference announced that the institution has been fined $10,000 as a result of the violation. The fine and suspension cannot be appealed.

The Big Ten determined that McCaffery’s actions toward the officials were in violation of Big Ten Conference Agreement 10.01, which states in part that “The Big Ten Conference expects all contests involving a member institution to be conducted without compromise to any fundamental element of sportsmanship. Such fundamental elements include integrity of competition, civility toward all, and respect, particularly toward opponents and officials.†McCaffery will serve his one-game suspension on Jan. 9 against Northwestern.

“I want to again apologize to the University of Iowa, my players, staff and the tremendous Hawkeye fans for my emotional reaction during Sunday’s game,†said McCaffery. “I regret my actions and accept the Big Ten Conference’s decision. I am ready to move on.â€

“Fran expressed his remorse and accepted responsibility from the first minute we talked on Monday morning, said UI Director of Athletics Gary Barta. “We accept the ruling of the Big Ten Conference and as a result Fran will not coach his team Thursday evening. We all look forward to putting the incident behind us. Our focus now is on Thursday night against Northwestern and the remainder of the conference season. Fran continues to have my full support moving forward.â€

In McCaffery’s absence, assistant coach Kirk Speraw will make the head coaching decisions during Thursday night’s contest.

Reminds me of the story when the student section at Iowa had planned to wear plaid/checkered jackets for a game against Indiana, but Knight threw the chair the game before and didn't make the trip.

Bet Ryan or Izzo wouldn't have been suspended.

I dont know. I think for that one, they would have. They both whine and curse relentlessly at the officials, but they dont leave the bench and take off after an official on the opposite end of the floor. At least they did it now with Northwestern coming up at home.

The suspension is for a glorified practice. Whatever! He will be back for Ohio State Sunday. Did anyone happen to hear what kind of reprimand/suspension the official got for making contact with a head coach?

Man, I wonder how many games the ref that threw the forearm shiver into Fran's chest will be suspended. Warrants at least 7 games, IMO.

Do officials have a code of conduct pertaining to charging a coach and arm barring them? Or one for calling a charge on marbe with 1:38 left in the 1st half when the defender was NOWHERE near set, especially considering the new rules constituting a charge this season? Or a code of conduct not allowing them down on all fours with an open mouth whenever they ref a BoBo game?

This is ridiculous. Above posters are correct that this would not happen to Izzo, Ryan, Matta. Why has Pelini never been been suspended in football? If the 2nd T was given for "bumping an official" he should have not got it. The official put his arm into McCaffery. So now they suspend him? This would have definitely not happened 15+ years ago.

It's the wussification of America. At least Delaney will probably at least give Fran a trophy for having to sit out against NW.

no, he charged the official, to which the official put his arm up to.

Someone post a freakin GIF. Your memory is terrible.

I'd like to know how many career suspensions were handed down to Bobby Knight or Gene Keady....

Knight did get suspended for the chair incident. Not sure about any other suspensions. One thing I do know, he should've been suspended a hell of a lot more, and let go a lot sooner than he was.

You can never touch an official. It's a clear line that every league has. He should be smart enough to not even be in a position where he could accidentally bump into one. Stay on the bench.

Let's be clear.

Ryan, Matta or Izzo have never exploded like McCaffery did. They never touched an official or got close enough that an official could touch them. Fran did.

The suspension is the right call, and going after the third official is probably what cemented it more than the second T.

Bet Ryan or Izzo wouldn't have been suspended.

Take 'em off.
