Fran - player development and how Fran has built the Iowa program

Among missing on some croots and subbing patterns, wasn't that the knock on the guy by a lot of peeps on here?

Last season - Marble - All B1G
This season - White - All B1G

next season - With Uthoff getting 3rd team this season, is it unreasonable that if he plays well, he could be potentially a 1st team All B1G next year? Could he be pre-season?

The season after that, you have Jok, who I know it's a long ways away, but if he continues to excel and mature like other players in the Fran era, it's NOT out of the question Jok will earn All B1G honors.

my point is this.. Fran is taking a guy from each class and turning them from little wanted (i know Uthoff was wanted) to All B1G performers at an alarming rate.

I am excited to see next seasons class and what gems it includes. Go Hawks

Fran won't always hit on the next All Big player each time. Now I know you can't get them all, but lets face it, if Fran can get his top targets, the team (MORE THAN LIKELY) will be better. Fran is targeting them first for a reason, and that is because he thinks they are the best players with the most upside. For instance some of Fran first choices (Chasson Randel, Trey Burke, EC Mathews, Tyler Ulis). Do you think we would be better if we had landed 1 or two of those guys instead of Ingram and Dickerson?

That is all I'm saying at least. There is nothing wrong with calling a spade a spade. He has done a great job with the talent he has brought in for sure, and he seems to be very good at uncovering talent when he misses on his top guys. I still say Iowa would be better off if he got all his top guys, but you could say that about every team, and that is unrealistic. Just get 1 or 2 of your top targets a year, and still hit on a under recruited guy, and then we are talking about contending for B1G titles.

^ I agree with that, i also think the whole crawl before you walk applies to Iowa basketball. He was recruiting those top guys to a school who hasn't won a NCAA game in close to 15 years and still hasn't.

The best part about Fran is it seems like a lot of his first choice recruits over preform their recruiting ranks too. It's not like his top choices are 5 star guys we have almost no chance at. They're high 3 low 4 star guys who end up being really good.

Getting elite talent isn't going to be easy is never going to be easy here. The state of iowa has a stigma for being boring and it gets cold here. It's even tougher when you're still recovering from being maybe the worst program in the conference for a stretch. If we continue recent success I have to imagine Fran will hit on a guy out two and hopefully the under the radar guys have continued succes.

The top 100 recruits will start hitting. Wins make recruiting easier.

Yep, and it's a lot easier to sell kids on Iowa when you're getting into the tournament, putting guys on the 1st Team All B10 team and getting them drafted. He's starting to get the body of work that top 100 type recruits want to see. If Iowa can win a game or two in the tournament this year and White can sneak into the second round that will only help more.

should you argue he should be there by now? It's his 5th year.

Where is there? If you mean the NCAA then yes he should be and he is for the 2nd year in a row. It takes longer to develop high school kids. Transfers should be ready to play sooner. Iowa State and Iowa take different approaches with their respective programs.

The nice thing about building the foundation with high school kids is it lasts. Someday when Fran calls it quits there should be 4 classes of players ready to win with the next coach. When Fred leaves the transfers quit coming and it's back to the drawing board.

Capt. Obvious Says: If you are not a big name basketball school, see MSU, Indiana, etc., you have to rely on other variables to recruit top players. We are at this point somewhat of a developmental, diamond in the rough recruiting program. However, as has been stated earlier in this thread, higher finishes in the BT each year, NCAA bids, even some love from the NIT, player to the NBA, two first team all big ten players in the last two years, and three consecutive 20+ seasons, all make up a pretty darn good resume'. In addition, I don't think it hurts that we have updated our basketball facility to make it competitive with other BT venues. I am going to bet that our ability to attract more highly rated players will improve.

Don't forget the BTN. Mom and Dad can be a long ways away from junior and still see every conference game and most of the non conference games. Between all of the ESPN channels and BTN all 18 of Iowa's conference games are televised.

Interesting response.

Few points:

1. Where is there? There is in reply to another poster saying hopefully Fran can get all the players he wants to run his system (aka fast tempo which they already have done the last couple years with HIS players)
2. Really? Play-in game in your argument? Common, we all know it's a play-in game. Credit to the team for making it this year though.
3. It may pain you to realize that ISU's highest two award winners (Niang 1st team, Morris 2nd team), were recruited out of highschool. Let alone 3 of the 5 starters were recruited out of High School.
4. Don't even try to ignore the fact that Fran has wanted transfers badly...he's just missed on a lot. Uthoff was a great transfer and at times has looked like your most complete player. Based on his comments this summer on Dickerson, looks like he struck out there.

I was thinking the same thing about sending guys to play in the league in the addition to winning so I checked to see if White was showing up in any mock drafts and here is the first I found and has him going 44th to the Twolves.

seriously, how'd this get all Iowa Statey..? You'd think by year 5 with all the success Fred has had in Ames, they'd be able to get over Fran and Iowa... come on, it's year 5.

Funny how they still polish Paw's cane over there after winning 5 games total in year 5&6 and never even having a winning conference record in 6yrs but bag on Fran for pulling Iowa out of the worst single season, back to back seasons and 3 yr run in the entire 150+ yr history of the program to being nationally respected. All this without a single "I'm so pwoud" speech.

Fran saved us from being the Iowa State football of basketball (perennial losers, team that sucks all the time, ongoing joke.etc, etc)
