Fran needs to start using some timeouts, same thing against MSU

He needs to stop the bleeding, quiet things down, talk to his team, what ever. waiting for tv timeouts is not doing it

Usually I'd agree with this thought. But...

Fran realizes the B1G regular season conference championship is a long shot.

So why not make his team work on mental toughness on their own on the floor (and even those on the bench) rather than gerber them. I understand why Groce did it since they were on the verge of getting blown out of the gym. Fran had 21 points (and another five) to have his team work on mental toughness. This team needs mental toughness if we want to think big picture success. I saw a lot of physical toughness tonight; did we see the seed of mental toughness?

Maybe it worked if that's what he was thinking.

I often think the same thing, but then I remember that Fran is getting paid pretty handsomely to coach the team, and that I get to criticize for free from my couch.

Seemed to work out pretty well tonight.

When the lead goes from 20 to 13 on the road you should consider calling a TO. When the lead gets down to 10 call timeout. When lead drops below 10.....WTF how have you not stopped the crowd from getting back in it. This was one of my biggest pet peeves for that UCLA coach when he was here. Can't we have a few set designed plays to go to out of a TO.

He needs to get better at controlling the runs. Basketball is a game of runs and coaches can help in stopping runs of the other team and in stopping bad runs by their team. The timeout can be used very intelligently to help your squad and he seems to think they get bonuses if they don't use them. It worked tonight but not against msu. I think he is a great developer as a coach and sets up great game plans. But as an in game manager he lacks. Great coaches can win some games by using timeouts and working refs. Two things he doesn't do well.

There is zero evidence of either of these things being anywhere close to true. Come on now.

What's strange is that Fran utilized his timeouts at OSU effectively and the team responded well to it. I'm not sure why he hasn't used it in similar situations. But he coached the same way at Siena so I guess it's what he does.

Let's face it, every coach has certain things that drive the fan base nuts. I don't agree with his philosophy on this either, but I also know he's smarter than me so I guess I'll have to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Dev wouldn't have had any more of an open look at the end of regulation in the MSU game had Fran used the timeout; giving Sparty the chance to catch their breath and set up a defense, it probably would have been worse. The shot didn't fall, Mel got pushed on his tip-in attempt and it appears there may have been a goal-tend that wasn't called. None of that's on Fran or whether he used a timeout.
