Albuquerque, New Mexico – Bob Schmitt, a football letterman at the University of Iowa in 1987 and 1988, passed away May 10 in Albuquerque, New Mexico following a heart attack. Schmitt was born Oct. 12, 1965 in Dubuque, Iowa.

Schmitt earned his undergraduate degree in mechanical and electrical engineering, a master’s degree in engineering, and a doctorate degree in engineering. During his Iowa football playing career Schmitt was a member of Hawkeye teams that earned five consecutive bowl bids (Freedom, Rose, two Holiday Bowls, Peach).

Schmitt spent his entire career at Sandia National Laboratories, where he was a well-known expert in shock physics and energetic material behavior. Schmitt was primarily known for the development of Sandia’s shock physics analysis package which is used throughout the US government and is the most used software of its kind in the Department of Defense.

Schmitt is survived by his three children, Will, Levi and Eliza, three brothers and two sisters, Cindy, Carol, Bill, Dan, and Dru. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Donna.

The extended Schmitt family will gather for a celebration of his life later this summer. A full obituary can be found at https://bit.ly/2M4gOV5.

**Does some back of the envelope math**

Welp, I think I'm gonna hit the elliptical tonight and skip those bratwursts for supper. RIP Mr. Schmitt. You were a helluva ball player and scholar.

Wow he had some tremendous post collegiate accomplishments.

Like O'Keefe said, definitely gets you thinking. I had a childhood friend pass away from cancer in March at the age of 53. Out of my high school class of 522 graduates we're probably losing half a dozen per year. That will only increase in the next fifteen to twenty years. I would estimate that out of the original class we've probably lost about 40 or 50 so far.

Bob was born 31 days after I was and there's a one in three chance that it was in the same hospital. Don't think he stayed in Dubuque very long however.

Pulled out the bucket list for a quick glance after seeing this unfortunate post. I need to get moving on that damn list. So far the only thing I've done is meet Scott Frost and tell him what a douche he is. Well...that was the only item on there at the time...so it was going well for awhile.

Patience. My old man is still searching for a 1978 Vandurra that was painted maize and blue with Michigan plates that was full of mouthy assholes that he encountered in 1987 so he can piss in their gas tank. He checks eBay Motors and Craigslist sites all across Michigan on a weekly basis waiting for it to pop up. It will. It will.
