Former B1G ref with some tales and comments on conference coaches

Good article- enjoyed the bits on Pelini.....he was a piece of work, to put it politely...........

Did you get the sense that he was saying that Frost came in as an entitled jerk? Which means our general impression of him was spot on. In fact, his characterization of all of the coaches he referenced were in line with how I view them. Including, no surprise on his compliment to Kirk (and Fitz and Chryst), but still good to hear it.

Whenever I made fun of Pelini to Nebbie fans, they always bring up Fran. While there is a facial comparison, I think the difference is that Bo was not overly bright and was sincerely angry at the refs and the media pretty much all the time.

Part of Fran's antics are an act. I am not saying he does not sincerely get mad, but he is often doing so in a calculated manner to fire up his team and persuade the refs. You rarely see Fran blowing up in post-game interviews or pressers. And, he is generally a fairly intellectual and mild mannered guy with the media from most interactions I see. Has he embarrassed us a time or two? Sure. Is he an embarrassment like Pelini was? No way.

Fran's players like him.

I agree. Fran is well liked. Most of Bo's players would have run through a brick wall for him too. He was popular in the locker room. He was driven out by the delusional boosters who were not satisfied with 10 win seasons and a coach who did not act in the Nebraska way. So, they hired Mike Riley. Giggle....

Kirk has always seemed pretty reasonable with refs on the sideline. They probably know they likely f-ed up if Kirk is yelling at them.
That one time whoever we were playing (I can't remember but it was in the last 2-3 years) had an ineligible TE downfield make a catch but it didn't get called Kirk came un-fucking-corked. I haven't seen him that mad since Chad Leistikow forgot the pickles on his sub sandwich.

You're the hero we all need today.

His relative calmness on the bench this year has been a huge factor in our team keeping it's composure in tight games. It's been a welcome change to see the other team curdle up in clutch situations (Rutgers' Young missing the late bunny, Davison's nut punch, Cockburn's crucial travel violation) when we have done it so many times over the years.

We had a TE (Chandler?) lose a TD reception vs Texas because he was covered on the line in the 2006 Alamo Bowl and it may also have ended up costing us the game as well.
