Forest Evashevski...there would not have been Nebraska

Had he remained Iowa's football coach, many folks that were in tune with the college football scene back in the 50's and 60's believe Iowa would have built the type of national power than Nebraska eventually built after Evy chose to be the AD instead of the FB coach...he was given the choice, one or the other...man, they should have let him be both!

The possibility of Iowa being a perennial power had Evy stayed on as coach has always been a good topic of discussion among Hawk fans.

Some think he was not flexible enough to change with the times and that eventually his "style" of play would no longer work. Personally, I feel he was a good coach and the Hawks likely would have had several winning seasons and a few more Rose Bowl appearances.

Jon, I don't like to assume anything, but you seem to be saying if Evy had stayed and Iowa would have built a "Neb-like" power, the Huskers would have been more "Iowa-like".

"For Hawkeye Fans Only" is a great book that gives some insight to this topic. I believe that this would of been the case. Coach E was a great recruiter and had the program rolling. What could of been!

What is weird is that his single wing is back...it is up at Michigan and called the spread option run attack.

What goes around come around,I guess. There is nothing truly new in football.

Slightly off topic, my dad went to Iowa in the late 50's after being in the air force and playing football in the armed service (not air force U) but he always talked about how small Bob Commings was and he was sure he could have kicked his a** if he had tried out and played at Iowa (he had a wife and my oldest sister at that time) so I always blamed him for Iowa hiring Bob Commings as a coach in the 70's. Interesting to think how Iowa's course could have changed had he played FB and no one knew Bob Commings. Maybe we never would have gotten to the Hayden Fry era.
