For Those Wondering About the Hoops Schollie Situation

What's your take on what he is saying if the Nunge commits? Do you think someone is leaving?

Sorry, I've been driving all day back from Cedar Rapids to Atlanta and just stopped for dinner at Texas Road House and just now realized both have committed. That's awesome news.

I would think that Fran plans to pay for Connor's education if necessary and have him walk-on. I'm guessing being able to sign another 4-star prospect is worth a lot more to him than $20,000 or whatever in-station tuition and room and board costs at Iowa. In fact, signing another 4-star prospect will likely net McCaffrey additional wins and NCAA tournament appearances that will get him bonuses worth far more than $20,000 so it's a far better use of his money than putting it in the stock market.

The question is where the other scholarship comes from. There was speculation in another thread that perhaps this is Dale Jones's last season given that he is a Senior. He doesn't necessarily need to use the sixth year. I was skeptical, but it makes the most sense. The only other explanation is simply that Fran believes that at least one transfer is incredibly likely given the past few years and is willing to roll the dice.

I think there's at least one or two transfers again after this year. There just aren't enough minutes to make everyone happy. I think the most likely candidates would be Ellingson or Moss.

Also have to wonder where the future minutes are coming for Kriener and/or pemsl. You have to assume your big men this year are uhl Wagner cook baer and Jones. All of those guys are back next year and now you have 2 new bigs coming in 2017 with Garza and nunge

Honest question: Is Fran allowed to pay for one of his player's tuition, even if that is his own son? Does the NCAA have any rules against something like that?

He can pay for his son to legally walk on and not have it count against the scholarship totals. He can't do that for other kids. There's a good chance Connor gets an academic scholarship as well.

We wrote about that last month:

Moss will start this season. He will not transfer.

It's kinda nice having a log jam because kids want to be Hawks. I could see Ellingson possibly leaving early… But if Dale Jones is going to stay then something has to give on top of Conner either walking on or getting academic scholly… Unless it’s already been talked about amongst the current Hawks how do the kids ‘on the edge’ for a lack of a better term take these two commits now? By Fran saying what he’s said that has to mean he’s willing/wanting someone currently on the team with eligibility remaining to take a hike right? Again my two dollar bet is on Ellingson with another dollar on it being Jones if I were to hedge it. Outside those two I see a future and solid roles for the others…

I think signing two more bigs virtually assures that Jones won't be back after this year. Also heard a rumor that pretty much fell in line with this, and totally make sense now as we just got commitments from 2 bigs.

If Jones plays lights out this season, Fran may have some tough decisions to make if nobody transfers.

If he can't play up to his pre injury abilities or can't play at all. He may be eligible for a Medical Exemption. He gets his scholarship but it doesn't count against the total allowed.

I'm hoping it's lights out and somebody transfers. I know it's a tough and sometimes a disheartening decision for a player to make but it's a frequent happening when programs are on the rise. I think recently the football team has experienced some natural attrition that rise can cause.

Probably mutual I would think

Yep, I would think. I also don't think Dale will play much this year. I have said for a long time that expecting much of him, if anything at all even was a stretch. He is about 9 months removed from an ACL tear, and this is his 2nd one. I just don't see him being healthy enough to impact this season.

We have 4 sophomores and 7 freshmen. Out of these 11 guys 2 or 3 will know they are at the bottom of the pecking order. And Jones is a wildcard. I have little doubt there will be scholarships for all 3 incoming freshmen.

I get what you're saying but it's speculation on both sides right now. Me belief is that Dale's game was never really predicated on athleticism to begin with. I think at 6'7 with the longest wingspan on the team, and the ability to stretch the floor with his shooting, Dale will carve out some sort of a role on this team. It might be only 10-15 minutes a night but it's hard to keep guys who can shoot the ball like that off the court. Again, that's just my opinion/prediction.

Dale is 6'7 not 6'9

Moss will start this season. He will not transfer.

Moss will start in '17, Jok will start this season. I think Ellingson will find it difficult to find minutes this season after Jok and Moss and next season over Moss and Daily. Just my opinion.
