For those of you that think our coaches know how to manage the clock...

Please give two examples of when the coaching staff actually managed the clock to either control the game and win (close game) or effectively used timeouts to manage the game clock?

I ask for two because this is obviously a discretionary call to some extent so instead of stretching and trying to find a close game where the play calling was effective, just give two so we can put this to rest.

I can name a bunch of games where clock management has either cost us the game or forced us into situations where only a miracle play win it (see LSU game for later example).

I will anxiously await your futile attempts.

MSU 2009. The staff knew MSU was going to score, so they let them score quickly, thereby giving us the ball back with enough time to easily march down the field and score.

OSU 2010. Ferentz didn't call a timeout when OSU had the ball on the goal line at the end of the game and let them run 40 seconds off the clock before running their next play. Had the players executed how O'Keefe expected them to, they would have scored in about 58 seconds thereby giving OSU another shot with plenty of time against our defense. Better to take that timeout into the locker room at the end of the game than give OSU a shot with that much time left.

How about the Orange Bowl last year? Ground out the clock at the end, plus scored a TD to put it away.

Penn State 2008 comes to mind as well. Great mix of intermediate throws along the sideline to get out of bounds to stop the clock to save a timeout for the final FG.

I am not a fan of Iowa's clock management. But there probably have been a few instances where they did alright.

Miami(OH) in '02. They managed that game well at the end and ran out the clock after they had trimmed the lead to one possession. I can't remember how much time was left, but it was a significant amount.

PSU in '08: Hard to argue with that. Won on a field goal with a second remaining.

MSU last season: from what you were asking in your criteria, sounds like this game fits.

Honorable mention: Texas Tech in 01, Wisconsin in '03,

Beat me to it, payton. Plus, most games we have lost lately have not been courteousy of the defense.

I don't think they know how to manage the clock. Probably deserve a solid D+ overall and an F-- for this year in particular.

I'll play devil's advocate though:

2009 Georgia Tech.
2009 Mich. St.
2009 Penn. St.
2008 Penn. St.
2004 Penn. St.
2002 Purdue
2002 Miami (OH)
2001 Texas Tech.
2001 Penn. St.
2000 Mich. St.
