Food for Thought

I think it was mentioned on a podcast, not sure if it was the hawkeyenation podcast or one of the others, but i found it interesting that of the top 11 or so teams that finished in the final top rankings 7 of them were not even ranked at the moment. so out of curiousity, here are the final top 25 rankings from last season and their record/ranking as of this week: This is the AP Ranking by the way.

2015: 2016:
#1 Alabama #1/8-0
#2 Clemson #3/8-0
#3 Stanford NR/5-3
#4 Ohio State #6/7-1
#5 Oklahoma #12/6-2
#6 Michigan State NR/2-6
#7 TCU NR/4-4
#8 Houston NR/7-2
#9 Iowa NR/5-3
#10 Ole Miss NR/3-5
#11 Notre Dame NR/3-5
#12 Michigan #2/8-0
#13 Baylor #13/6-1
#14 Florida State #19/5-3
#15 North Carolina #18/6-2
#16 LSU #15/5-2
#17 Utah #16/7-2
#18 Navy NR/5-2
#19 Oregon NR/3-5
#20 Oklahoma State #22/6-2
#21 Wisconsin #8/6-2
#22 Tennessee NR/5-3
#23 Northwestern NR/4-4
#24 Western Kentucky NR/6-3
#25 Florida #10/6-1

So, 12 out of the 25 teams that finished ranked last year are not this year and 7 out of the final top 11. That seems at least somewhat atypical to me, maybe someone else can do more research on that. I was just curious and looking that up was surprising to me.

Misery loves company so it pyschologically helps me to realize we're not the only ones having a frustrating season :)

I think it's obvious that Iowa and MSU just beat up on each other so much in the championship game that it took everything out of each team for their respective bowl games and the current season.
I like this theory.

Okay what's your thoughts?

Love realism...

Stanford, ND, MSU, Oregon & Tennessee all unranked. Tennessee is the biggest surprise for me. They've had this core group of players for awhile that seemed to have peaked on that January day against Iowa and have been on a slow cruise control since. The SEC East has never been weaker and they still aren't going to get to Atlanta.

I'd be curious to know, of the teams that were ranked at the end of last year, but unranked this year, how many starters each of them returned. I've got to think we are near, if not at, the top.

The thing is, most of those other teams have coaches who will try some different things - lineup changes, gameplan changes, practice changes, whatever - to get their teams going and finish in those rankings.

I have no confidence our coaches will even feel a need to make any changes.

We need to hold on to this one for a few years.

Yes.
All those teams will be back to form way sooner than we will be.
I think their coaches make less than Ferments too.
