Following this coaching search is like a 7 step grief cycle

Except with different emotions. Maybe, something like this:

Excitement - We canned that bum!
Optimism - We've got a great job, we'll find a great coach.
Angst - What? He doesn't want the job?
Fear - Crap. Now, no one wants the job.
Anger - Why did we fire so-and-so if this is all we're going to get?
Acceptance - Well, we had to hire someone.
Hope - He'll do fine (we're pretty sure).
 
I didn't know they added extra steps to the grief cycle. I remember the 5: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance.

Either way, I think we are following that pretty smoothly. We are firmly trenched in the depression step. Sometimes, people never leave that step...
