Florida Gators: Scouting Iowa’s Outback Bowl Foe

Looks to be an even match up. Coaching will be important. Need the gameplan on both sides of the ball to be effective and unpredictable

On defense

MLB Jarrad Davis has been battling a severe ankle sprain since the mid season Missouri game. It's unlikely to keep him out of the bowl game, although it may be a factor as the game wears on.

DE Bryan Cox is now listed as probable for the game. Another ankle injury.

SLB- Daniel McMillian (Shoulder) and SS- Duke Dawson (Ankle) are both listed as questionable.

With how out D has been playing I feel pretty confident we will win. Their offense is bowling shoe ugly.

David Sharpe and Martez Ivey on the left side of their line are pretty good. Their center TJ McCoy is a redshirt freshman who was pressed into action because of injury. He's gone from being a liability to performing adequately.

What they have on the right side of the line remains to be seen. Right guard Fredrick Johnson is listed as questionable (undisclosed). Right tackle Jawaan Tayler is listed as questionable (undisclosed). Backup right guard Jordan Tyler is listed as questionable (ankle). Johnson is also listed as backing up at right tackle & Tyler also as backup center. We'll see what shows up.

Florida's primary tight end C'yontai Lewis is also listed on the injury list (ankle).

I would expect a number of the walking wounded to be playing come bowl time. Just use lots of tape.

It looks like Florida's coaching staff is putting a maximum effort into filling in the holes in some very thin units. Safety and linebacker are both very thin on defense. It sounds like true freshman cornerback Chauncey Gardner may start at safety. Marcus Maye is out and safety's Tayler, Dawson, and Washington are all questionable and not practicing. At linebacker Alex Anzalone (broken arm), Jarrad Davis (ankle) and David Reese (wrist) are all out for the start of bowl practices. Linebacker Kylan Johnson has been dinged up but will play. True freshman Vosean Joseph and redshirt freshman Rayshad Jackson will get a lot of paying time at linebacker.

Having defensive end Bryan Cox back may help the defensive line on the outside, but Cox has been out for a long time. The interior of the Florida defensive line has been it's strength this year.

Florida's two NFL quality cornerbacks will try to keep Iowa playing in the tackle box and compensate for the rest of the back seven. The status of middle linebacker Jarrad Davis at game time is going to be a big deal.

Florida fans don't seem the least bit interested in Iowa.

There was a time when (old fart talking) when fans from each school would flock to the other team's forums to banter and share. Not so this year.

I agree that Florida will try to take advantage of Iowa's linebacker in the 4-3 zone defense. They also have a respectable inside zone running game. They'll try to keep Iowa's linebackers close in for defense against the run. Their offensive line is pretty nicked up too, so we shall see how much push they get against Iowa's defensive line.

If I'm playing Iowa, I do the same thing that UM and Nebraska did. Throw deep. Time and time again WR are getting behind Iowa's secondary. They just didn't have good throws. The bomb is there for opponents.

Appleby isn't going to hit the deep stuff with any regularity. Del Rio might hit the deep receivers more often if Iowa gives him time.
