One glaring thing stood out to me...

Shot selection!

Iowa was forcing some bad shots VERY early in the shot clock.

RDM, Jok and Gessel were all guilty of this. Trying to take pull up jumpers early in the shot clock instead of working the ball around and utilizing screens.

Another issue which is probably why we keep losing is the inability to hit the open shots while teams we play seems to nail contested shot after contested shot.

yep,we shot very poorly in that game. Conversely it seems every. Team we played in our losses had their best offensive performance hitting shots they had struggled with. It may be due to their confidence knowing they are eventually going to get good looks... Ho w do you explain hitting shots with the clock about t o go down.

yeah the Hawks play good D most of the shot clock.. only to have the last 5 seconds totally collapse and someone hit a dagger at the buzzer

I was out of the country so I still haven't watched it. Now, I have reviewed the box score and it told me everything I needed to know. Gesell, Oglesbee, and Jok went 0-17. You can't beat anyone when your second guard position is 0-17. Let's say they shoot 25% and we make 4 more baskets...we would have won this game.

i said in a thread that this team will go as Mike Gesell goes. He's a key shooter/playmaker...he shoots the ball well...we are most likely going to win. He can get his own shot and get to the rim, so he's a much different and diverse player than Josh is. I'm not pinning any losses on him as it's a team game, but he's a critical cog in our machine. Against NW...that cog was missing.

I've moved on and am not worried. Just by the law of averages I feel we are due for some wins. Although my preseason Sweet 16 prediction I am rescinding.

If a team is hot once you can chalk it up to a a bit of luck by the other team. When a string of opponents shoot way above their season averages it means your defense has gone in the toilet.

The defense against Northwestern was atrocious. Northwestern made a couple of contested shots (Demps shot at halftime comes to mind) but they made a LOT of wide-open 3's at the end of the shot clock after Iowa was left scrambling to help on the guy driving.
