Field goals and Extra points

I think you will see a nice improvement with him from his Frosh year to Soph. He had almost identical #'s to Keading after his first year so that is promising.

KF singled out Meyer along with Coker and Morris as guys he expects to step up even more as sophmores...makes me pretty confident in Meyer.
Now, about that punting...whats the story? Is Mullings around?

Stat wise our kicking game was actually decent...however we had some of the ugliest made FG's and XP's I've seen.

This.

I'm much more worried about our punting game than or FG and extra point kicking. I've heard that Mullings is still struggling to get his punts off in a timely manner. Maybe if we can convince opposing defenses to leave our punter alone, everything will work out.

It's difficult to replace a guy like Donahue, but especially so for teams like ours, who depend so heavily on the battle for field position to win games. Our bend but don't break defense typically results in longer drives on offense. If the O isn't up to snuff, that punting game is the only thing saving us in the battle for field position.

As I noted in another post, I don't think our kicking problems are directly related to field goals and extra points. I think the problems were our lack of coverage on kickoffs that helped contribute to the talks of problems with special teams.

Myers numbers as a freshman mirrored kaeding's and I just can't see where that's a bad thing.

I think the main reason we noticed Meyer's struggles last year is because they seemed to come at such inopportune times. If he had missed an extra point against Ball State instead of tied at 27 at Arizona in the fourth quarter, I don't think we would have realized it was an issue. Same goes for the miss against Wisconsin. We lost by 1 point after missing an XP earlier in the game, so we notice that miss. Other than the obvious big issues, he was pretty solid.

We'll have to see what Ferentz says about our kicking game this year. I know that over the past few years he's made a point of mentioning how we lacked consistency there. However, after this past spring, I don't recall any criticism of our PK-game.

I think that there's a reason why Meyers is already on 'ship. I think that they coaches are already confident that he'll be able to get the job done.

Kicker, I don't think it was Meyer but Mossbrucker that missed the XP, but your reasoning has validity.

Our misses, regardless the game or season will be magnified more due to the fact most of our games are close.

Just double checked and that's right. Mossbrucker missed against Arizona and didn't play again the rest of the season. Meyer took over the next week and missed XPs vs. Wisconsin and Michigan State.

Missed field goal in Wisconsin Game also but I think it was a bad snap too

KF said that Johnny Mullings will be in school but that he is not at camp. Sounds like he is not on the team...

I like M Meyers, but I hope he can get those kickoffs to stay long in the latter part of the season. Seems like they got shorter as the season went on. He did well with field goals (even if he missed some PATs). I suspect the job is his, unless someone else really outshines him in camp.

On Iowa!

He's on the team, but they can only invite 105 guys to camp. They have more guys than that between the varsity and practice squads once the season starts. So he's on the team, at least as long as he still wants to be.
