Ferentz: Weisman Out, 10/30 Transcript

Q. How would you characterize the mindset of your football team right now?
COACH FERENTZ: I’ll let you know more today. They were fine on Sunday. It’s the last time I really saw them. We’re a team that’s lost four straight games, and we’ve got three to go. Our mindset, I hope, is that we’re going to get ready to play Indiana and go down and do a nice job.

Please tell me he didn't say that. We haven't lost 4 in a row and we have 4 games to go.

""And outside of that, the thing that really hurt us was the quarterback, a quarterback that’s a very dangerous player."

Gee Kirk, maybe we should look into getting one of these qbs that hurt opposing teams with their feet??? Unreal that NW at any given time can have multiple qbs on the roster who can shred us at will, yet we can't even get one every 3 or 4 years.

Don't be surprised if the Hawks do well at Indiana. Hawkeyes have pride and certainly are not satisfied with the way things are going......

I thought we would be slaughtered at MSU and look what happened. Of course, we did have the Wiseman.......

I'd be shocked if we scored anywhere near enough pts to win. Remember Jack, Sparty has proven to be every bit as pathetic as Iowa.

Heaven forbid he misstates something in a press conference. Thank goodness we have jacka$$es like you to point out the obvious.

I'd like to see your every public word transcribed and see how well you fair.

Kirk Ferentz updates Iowa's injury situation and talks about this week's foe, the Indiana Hoosiers in this transcript

"I know what year it is. It’s 2012, I get that. But the Steelers, I throw that out. The Steelers are living in the same world that they were in ’68, but they operate a certain way, and they’ve been pretty successful."

I thought this was an interesting peek into the mind of the Captain. Unfortunately, things aren't working out so well at Iowa with this mindset.

A quarterback doesn't have to beat people with there feet, some of the best quarterbacks in the NFL aren't great runners, but you have to have someone that can at least throw the ball to an open receiver downfield. We have a qb who can't throw or run.

You can't win with no qb at all. That's what we're trying to do.

This offense will score about 5 times. That might mean 15 points or up to 35. Its a question of getting TDs with the help of T/Os and keeping Indy down - hoping that they'll self destruct quicker than Iowa.

Honestly I don't think Kirk is a big NFL fan - the Steelers haven't had a running game, and they've gone with a sort of short pass/spread type system ever since Bettis retired. They are throwing the ball on 60% of their plays so far this year and are rushing for less than 100 yards a game.

True, but they don't sit in the pocket and fold like a lawn chair everytime they think they feel pressure. Most decent qbs at any level can at least move the pocket with their feet and avoid a tackler or two to bye some more time. And truthfully, I don't care about NFL qbs. This is college and we are Iowa. I'd take mobile qb who provides another element the D has to prepare for over a pure passer any day of the week.

Vandenburg's footwork and sense of time in the pocket is horrible. If you look at two of the best quarterbacks in the NFL right now (Peyton and Brady) Both are slow and awkward when they run but they regularly step up in the pocket and are able to avoid rushers by using great footwork. For recent Hawkeye pocket passers Drew Tate had some excellent moves in the pocket to buy more time and complete a pass and I think Stanzi had a decent pocket awareness. Vandenburg has done a terrible job at that this year and has made no improvement this year. It is my belief he is putting way to much pressure on himself and the more he struggles the worse it gets for him. His TD pass total this year is flat out embarrassing. I hope Ferentz doesn't hesitate with a move if he struggles this week.

If Ferentz didn't take JVB out of the PSU game, I don't expect it to ever happen. We will just have to suffer through the rest of the season watching him fumble around back their, and hope we can run for 300 yards a game. Once Weisman gets healthy, we should consider running the Air Force or GT offense. It would be more fun than watching our horrific passing offense.

Iowa's pass defense won't deter Indy's pass offense (per usual). Even more likely because of Iowa's complete lack of a pass rush. Iowa will need to rely on Indy's mistakes to stop their offense (per usual).

For Iowa to beat Indy, Iowa's running game will have to shine. Score some running points. Definitely take time off the clock. No turnovers.

A coach should know if they've lost 4 in a row or 2 in a row and how many games are left. There's only 12 games, not hard to figure out the numbers.

He might as well have. If you listen to half the posters on here we've lost every game this year. Not sure how he lost track of how many games we have left. I'd venture that he's more focused on this week then what's to come and probably lost track. No idea why I'm trying to think for him...

HANK: Bobby, I never thought I'd need to tell you this, but I would be a bad parent if I didn't. Soccer was invented by European ladies to keep them busy while their husbands did the cooking.
BOBBY: Why do you have to hate what you don't understand?
HANK: I don't hate you, Bobby.
BOBBY: I meant soccer.
HANK: Oh. Oh, yeah, I hate soccer. Yes

Oh ya, your ignorance is pretty obvious, although I've noticed that many on this board seem to also have an ignorance about soccor. (Pretty sure I'm going tocatch Hell from many after this statement.) And their ignorance is also obvious. It's obviously the most popular sport in the world, and those who refuse to learn and appreciate the sport are also displaying their ignorance.

lets see we started the year with 3 new starters on the OL, then in the PSU game Iowa lost 2 new starters for the year, the RB situation is arevoving door to injuries, ,of course this has absolutely no effect on the play of the QB.. YEAH RIGHT

People who refuse to learn and appreciate soccer are not ignorant by necessity. I don't understand it, and don't want to. But I also don't hate it or rail on it. I'm just indifferent. People who decide to hate something without trying to understand it are ignorant.

The offensive line had been playing at a very high level all year outside of the NIU game. The running game has been fine (we've had either Weisman or Bullock at 100% in just about every game).

Vandy has been bad from the get go, and showed no signs of improvement until last weekend. You can't pin that on the OL or RB play, because those have two of the best units on the team this year (on either side of the ball).
