Ferentz Presser Open Thread

Excited about getting Hill...great career, obvious position of need, critical to the point considering signing three running backs. Once we had commits from Greg and Barkley we felt good. Jason White has decided to come back so that help too. Rather than graduating. The cobination of those guys and what we have on campus feel good...told them they have a chance to compete

Hill original commit to ISU.

Better question for his family. We kept the line in the water and visited him on occasion. Over a period of time he maybe felt like this style of offense might be better suited for him, as big a factor as anything

Playing time is realistic but starting is tough (DL). It's tough to do that up front when you are a freshman. We have lost a lot of quality players, 8 in a two year span (DL) and we are thin in experience. Guys on campus have best chance to develop as starters...we have four guys on the DL that are bigger and more developed than other two...Jaleel and Faith have a better chance to contribute due to size

Success in chicago this year..how big role Reese Fleming have in recruiting

Reese is charismatic, and a special personality. We were impressed with Reese at one of our one day camps in June, offense and defense. We are excited about him. Sidebar, benefit that he is pretty active on the recruiting front..pretty persuasive...he helped with some of the other guys

Two Juco players...talk about how relationship with Juco players

I thought it was a 50/50 shot on Riley staying or going...I think we were not sure where that was going to go...we learned about Eric a year ago..great student and leader...we talked to him about coming in and starting school in January...from all reports he is off to a good start, two weeks in..happy to get him. It's nice to have that option available

Coker...first time we could talk with you in person

He has left school..we wish him all the best. I think he is a tremendous young guy. Anything else, we can talk about that next week

Nate offense or defense?
Intersting guy..8 man..Chad Greenway was 9 man...not same player, but they were dominant players who went both ways...they both really enjoyed playing...really competed. Has a chance to play a few positions..start at RB and see what happens

Keppy and Kittle former hawk sons

Worked out that way..Myron was here back in the mid 80's and came from Durant..had a nice career here..got on Mitchell due to wrestling, one of his first offers last spring...impressed us on tape..

Kittle, Bruce played here...his wife is a much better athelte..held records at drake and she and her sister beat up on Bruce and I in a two on two game in 1984...George, on tape, he is in between..not sure position yet...upside, like competitiveness, intelligent...we think he is a guy that has a chance to blossom in our program...good ball skills..not sure fast enough or not receiver, maybe TE or OLB

How important are recruiting rankings..schools national title teams are right there atop rankings

If you come back here 10 years it will be same, lot of those schools will be in presason top 10 next fall...I dont pay too close attention..entertained today...on bike and ESPNU is on...its becoming to look like draft coverage...similarities..NFL draft is celebration of what player did in college, today its about HS..neat things, neat to report...Riley Reiff is highly rated, but whereever he ends up, he has work to do...he will do it well...all you can do is try to project what you think they can do at your program..we try to be intelligent...but rankings, they dont mean a lot at this point...important where players are in last two or three years of career, on track to get degress and on field accomplishments...everyone starts focusing on the hard work here very soon

How active LeVar?

He was very active...once we had th eopening he was in the army...full speed. I am only laughing because I think he missed a plane by three or four minutes, getting into Chicago 5:30 next am...on a few goose chases..good way to break in..welcome to recruiting and coaching

Levar staff?

Presumptuous of me...

I talked to Kittle, first year as full time college coach, nothing more enjoyable or nothing more hard

Kornbrath #1?

Wienke and Mullings will compete this spring, someone will be #1 and Connor will have a chance to come in..players can come in and start and we are all for whoever is best

Offered 4 year scholarships this time around?

I am not sure. I think that got rescinded...Not sure where that is at...we always intend guys to graduate and have a great career...the $2000 legistlation important, the four year not so much...this is not a one year trial..never gave any thought to it

How many preferred walk ons will take

Ideally get roster to 115-118...will know more after spring, get through spring practice and see who sticks with team..just had a frosh walk on lineman retire a week ago...

any recruits express concern not named DC yet?

It came up once this past week and maybe one other time. I dont think its a big deal. What I tell people is we have been here 13 years...been fortunate stability...when we lost someone in the 80's, Coach Fry was able to bring great coaches in..we have not had too many leave...two retire..one at 68 and one at 70...couple guys to NFL...we will always get good people here. Not worried about it and recruits understood it.

Done OL, or potential for more

We have the poitential, still waiting on one prospect to make decisions

Super Bowl plans?

I hope to be there..we will host another junior day on Sunday..hope I can get to Indy by kickoff and go as a fan and dad

Recruiting harder to finish line, more combat closer to signing day?

It's been crazy last few years..its the nature of recrutiing. Interesting, some of other schools that were scrambling at end..no one immune...I am huge believer in early signing period..voluntary, not mandatory...helpful for kids that dont want attention, but that is not gaining traction...recruiting is a bit saner, but still interesting
